Houston Texans Preview: Starter Reps Mask Potential Second-Half Drop-Off

The Houston Texans enter their preseason finale searching for their first exhibition win after dropping decisions to the Chargers (27-7) and Raiders (22-20).

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans has yet to formally announce his rotation, but expectations point to C.J. Stroud getting a brief tune-up under center before making way for the reserves, similar to the amount of action he saw last week.

Stroud saw around 20 snaps in last week's matchup against Las Vegas, completing 4-of-6 passes for 27 yards in a tightly scripted outing.

Once Stroud steps aside, Davis Mills gives Houston competence at the primary backup spot. Mills has been efficient this August, completing 20-of-30 passes for 175 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions.

However, the drop-off in production becomes much larger once Mills exits the game.

Third- and fourth-string signal-callers Brett Rypien and Graham Mertz have operated under very conservative game plans, combining for a meager 67 passing yards on 17 total attempts.

While they have largely avoided costly turnovers, their inability to push the ball downfield has stalled the offense late in games.

Houston has failed to score more than 20 points in either preseason contest, making it difficult to pull away from opponents once the starters and primary backups exit.

Carolina Panthers Preview: Strong Offensive Execution

Unlike Houston, the Carolina Panthers possess an extra game of preseason conditioning under their belt, having compiled a 2-1 record across three exhibition outings.

Carolina defeated Arizona (33-30) and Jacksonville (34-17) while dropping a decision to Buffalo (29-14).

Panthers head coach Dave Canales announced that Bryce Young and the primary starters will sit out the finale after absorbing heavy reps during Wednesday's joint practice session. That likely leaves Kenny Pickett and Kyle Trask to command the offense for the entirety of Friday night.

Carolina’s backup quarterback play has been among the most effective in the league this August.

Pickett has been surgical as the secondary option, completing 39-of-55 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Trask has been equally sharp in less action, connecting on 10-of-13 throws for 105 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

Haynes King also delivered a dynamic performance in the Hall of Fame Game — throwing for 180 yards and two touchdowns while adding 39 rushing yards and a score on the ground — before a hamstring injury sidelined him.

Carolina's offensive depth has proven capable of sustaining drives and putting up points in the preseason, scoring 33 or more points in two of their three exhibition appearances.

Texans vs Panthers Prediction, Analysis

This matchup fits the mold for our Bet Labs system titled "NFL Preseason: Small ‘Dogs, Low Totals." The strategy focuses on exhibition games with total lines capped under 40 points and tight point spreads between zero and three.

With the total set at 36.5 and Carolina catching 1.5 points, the system identifies a prime opportunity where points are scarce and the value sits squarely with the underdog.

In low-scoring exhibition environments driven by conservative play-calling, catching points with a competitive roster yields long-term profitability.

The market has priced Houston as a slight favorite due to the expectation that Stroud and the first-team offense will play a series or two and the Texans having the profile of being the better regular season team.

However, favoring a few scripted starter drives over four quarters of strong backup depth represents a market inefficiency.

Houston's offense has struggled to generate points in the second half, while Carolina’s reserve quarterbacks have consistently moved the chains regardless of who is under center.

Let's trust the system, fade the market perception, and take the points with the Panthers here.

Pick: Panthers +1.5
