Ducks vs. Oilers Preview

Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks have been full of surprises, effectively limiting Connor McDavid for stretches and utilizing quality depth scoring to take a commanding series lead. However, the pressure of closing out a series on the road is a different beast entirely.

While the public might see the Ducks at +140 as an "easy" pick given the series lead and Edmonton’s shaky goaltending, the "Off a Heart Breaker" system warns against this recency bias.

Anaheim has benefited from Edmonton's mistakes, but a focused Oilers team playing "backs against the wall" hockey is arguably the most dangerous opponent in the NHL.

Edmonton Oilers

Game 4 was a true heartbreaker for the Oilers. After jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, Edmonton failed to protect the cushion, eventually falling 4-3 in overtime on a controversial Ryan Poehling winner. Now trailing 3-1 in the series, the Oilers return home with their season on the line.

Historically, this is when Edmonton plays its best hockey. We saw a significant jump from McDavid over the last two games; after being held pointless to start the series, #97 has exploded for four points in his last two outings.

However, one thing to keep note of is that McDavid will be a game time decision, after it's clear he's been dealing with an ankle injury.

The goaltending situation remains a wild card. Tristan Jarry was underwhelming in his Game 4 start, and while Connor Ingram struggled earlier in the series (4.70 GAA), he has shown flashes of brilliance during the regular season.

Whether it is Ingram returning to the crease or a desperate Jarry looking for redemption, the Oilers' skaters are expected to play a much more disciplined defensive game to support their netminder.

Ducks vs. Oilers Prediction

The Oilers know that one more mistake ends their summer. Following a loss where they blew a multi-goal lead, expect Edmonton to come out with a ravenous pace at Rogers Place.

Even though McDavid is banged up, with the Oilers scratching to stay alive, I won't be surprised to see him suit up.

With the home crowd behind them, the Oilers are primed to dictate the tempo from the opening draw. Trust the trend of elite teams responding to heartbreak with a dominant performance.

Pick: Oilers Moneyline in Regulation (-110, FanDuel)
