Jannik Sinner vs Lorenzo Musetti Preview, Prediction
Sinner Preview
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner booked his ticket to his eighth consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal in emphatic fashion, dropping just three games against in-form Alexander Bublik. Granted, it wasn't the Kazakh player's most inspired performance, but it was a good sign for the Wimbledon winner.
Sinner had shown some gaps in his game in a less-than-straightforward win over Denis Shapovalov in his third-round match. Still, he took advantage of every single short ball and Bublik's overhit dropshots to produce a hammering for the ages.
The Italian has now extended his record in New York to 21-5 on his way to a third quarterfinal appearance in the last four tournaments. It's not strange; his flat-out, effective shot selection makes him the ideal type of player for the hard courts at Flushing Meadows.
Having cleared any signs of doubt that could've lingered over him after retiring from the Cincinnati final, there's very question marks about Sinner being the favorite.
It's not a matter of what he needs to do, but rather what he could go missing to lose this matchup.
Musetti Preview
The second-best-ranked Italian on the ATP Tour was far from a certainty upon reaching New York, having essentially crashed out of every tournament he's played since reaching the Roland Garros semifinals.
Musetti has gone from strength to strength in this US Open.
He survived a meeting with the always tricky Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, but he's since more or less steamed past David Goffin, compatriot Flavio Cobolli β who retired at 2-0 down on the third β and Jaume Munar, taking all out in straight sets to reach this stage.
He got a hand by avoiding world No. 5 Jack Draper, who withdrew with injury, but he's otherwise been flawless, adding a layer of decisiveness to his always elegant and attacking game.
However, questions remain over what he can do to hurt Sinner, who's looking about as solid as possible from the baseline and has very few gaps in his game.
Sinner vs Musetti Predictions, Betting Analysis
It's a tough proposition for Musetti. If he's to learn anything from Sinner's dismantling of Bublik, he'll have to serve a very high percentage, take every opportunity he has from the baseline and look to be more effective with his creativity.
And even then, he's going to have to hide his backhand, counter Sinner's power and remain focused throughout the whole match.
Taking Sinner out of his rhythm and getting him to second-guess himself might be his only shot at a second Grand Slam semifinal this year.
That's much easier said than done, and while Musetti's evolution over the past week and a half has been spectacular, he's still a long way to keeping pace with his countryman.
Pick: Under 31.5
