Alex Hinton's Red Sox vs Angels Preview
The Boston Red Sox have been in the headlines quite a bit since shockingly trading away star hitter Rafael Devers, with the fallout coming just before their road trip.
Despite just scoring five runs in Seattle, they were able to win two of three from the Mariners.
However, they dropped the series in San Francisco as Devers homered on Saturday and became the 85th player in MLB history to homer against all 30 teams.
Boston will finish its road trip in Anaheim to begin this week and will look to return the favor after the Angels took two of three games in Boston. That series featured 40 runs in the three-game set, with the Red Sox's lone victory being an 11-9 victory.
In the series, Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela were standouts.
Duran went 6-for-13 (.462) with four doubles. In June, he is hitting just .213 with one home run, four runs batted in, and a .654. However, he is hitting .276 against right-handed pitching on the year, and he should have a good matchup tonight against Kochanowicz.
Rafaela went 6-for-14 (.429) with a double, three home runs, and five runs batted in against the Angels. He also hit a home run in two of his last three games.
Rookies Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer join Duran and Rafaela in Boston's youth movement. Anthony is the No. 1 prospect in baseball, per MLB Pipeline. He hit his first career home run last Monday, but thus far has struggled to adapt to MLB pitching and is hitting .111 in 35 at-bats
The Angels dropped two of three over the weekend with a pair of one-run losses to the Astros.
However, they were able to hold the fort with Mike Trout on the IL. Since his return, the Angels are 12-10. They are in the thick of the AL Wildcard race as they are two games back of the Red Sox and 2.5 games back of the Mariners for the third AL Wildcard spot.
In the three-game set against the Red Sox, Trout had a hit in all three games, including a home run and three RBI in the first game. Trout is 2-for-5 with a home run off Buehler.
However, more recently, Nolan Schanuel and Logan O'Hoppe have carried the offense of late.
Schanuel has a hit in six of his last eight games. In those six games, he has driven in a run in every game with three home runs and nine RBI in that span. Schanuel leads the team with a .283 batting average, and he is hitting .300 in June.
O'Hoppe has a hit in four of his last five games. In his previous two games, he has three home runs and has driven in six. He leads the Angels with 17 home runs and is second among all catchers behind Cal Raliegh.
The Angels may need their offense to carry the way in this one, with Jack Kochanowicz getting the start.
Kochanowicz has allowed just four earned runs in 9 2/3 innings over his past two starts. However, he still carries a 5.38 ERA and 1.55 WHIP with just 58 strikeouts in 77 innings. He ranks in the 25th percentile or worse in xBA, xERA, strikeout rate, walk rate, barrel rate, and hard hit percentage.
Red Sox vs Angels Prediction, Betting Analysis
In the first series between these teams, the Over hit in two of the three games, with 13 runs in the first game and 20 runs in the finale.
Three of the last four meetings in Anaheim have gone Over as well.
With Buehler and Kochanowicz starting, those trends may continue. Both starters have an ERA over 5.30, and they both allow a lot of traffic while not striking out many batters.
Additionally, while the Red Sox bullpen has trended upwards after several blown saves earlier in the year, the Angels rank 28th in bullpen ERA. Neither bullpen is at full capacity after their weekend series. Three Angels' relievers (Hunter Strickland, Brock Burke, and Connor Brogdon) threw over 20 pitches yesterday.
Between these pitching staffs, we should see at least nine runs. A few hitters I expect to stand out are Rafaela, Trout, O'Hoppe, and Schanuel.
Pick: Over 9 (-105, Fanatics)
