Tigers vs Angels MLB Betting Preview
The Tigers went into the All-Star break having won nine of 12 games. However, they ran into Cristopher Sanchez and Zack Wheeler in their final games before the break. After six shutout innings from Reid Detmers, they looked on their way to a third consecutive loss.
Down to their final out, Hao-Yu Lee delivered one of the biggest hits of the Tigers' season with a two-run double. Prior to that hit, the Tigers were 0 for their last 14 with runners in scoring position, but the moment was not too big for Lee, who is hitting .333 with runners in scoring position this season.
Troy Melton kept the Tigers in the game with a strong outing himself, working 5 and 2/3 innings, allowing one run while striking out nine in his first appearance in his hometown. Keider Montero worked the final 3 and 1/3 frames in his new hybrid relief role, earning his sixth win of the season, but also likely making himself unavailable tonight.
Fellow California native and two-time reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal will start Game 2 tonight. He has made six starts since returning from the IL and has pitched six innings in just two of them. However, that has not stopped him from piling up the strikeouts, as he has recorded 44 strikeouts in 32 and 1/3 innings in that span.
Now, the Tigers' bats will look to wake up and provide their ace some run support. On paper, they get a favorable matchup against Grayson Rodriguez, who has both a 12.2% strikeout rate and walk rate and a 1.068 OPS allowed against left-handed hitters. That should benefit the Tigers' bevy of left-handed hitters, most notably Kevin McGonigle, Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter.
The Angels acquired Rodriguez for Taylor Ward in an offseason trade. Ward is a pending free agent, giving them more years of team control with Rodriguez, although year one has not gone according to plan. He has been limited to seven starts this season, and those starts have resulted in a 7.98 ERA, 1.74 WHIP and under a strikeout per inning.
If the Angels are going to win tonight, he will need to recapture the magic he had during his outing against the Tigers in May. Rodriguez allowed just two hits and one earned run while striking out five in five innings against the Tigers in Detroit in what has been by far his best outing of the season. Though it is worth noting, the Tigers were in the middle of a dreadful 6-22 stretch.
Now, it is the Angels who are struggling, as they have won just two of their last 13 games. In that span, they have averaged just 3.5 runs per game, which does not bode well when facing Skubal. However, the good news for them is they have a right-handed-heavy lineup.
Despite his dominance over the last two and a half years, 38 of the 43 home runs Skubal has allowed in that span have been against right-handed hitters. Zach Neto and Jorge Soler have each homered twice off Skubal, though they are hitting just .164 against him as a team.
Mike Trout is 1-for-3 against Skubal. He returned to the Angels' lineup just before the break and played in the All-Star Game on Tuesday, his 12th selection. Since returning to the lineup, he has two doubles, a home run and three runs batted in.

Tigers vs Angels Pick, Betting Analysis
Despite Skubal not pitching in the seventh inning since returning from the IL, he has recorded eight strikeouts in four of his last six starts. He has thrown 93 pitches in three of those outings, so the strikeouts have been a contributing factor in elevating his pitch count. Tonight, he gets a great matchup against the Angels, who are third in strikeout rate against left-handed pitchers.
Skubal had eight strikeouts in six innings against the Angels in Anaheim last season. However, that game is more notable for the Tigers scoring eight runs in the ninth inning to pull off a 9-1 victory. Two runs in the ninth did the trick last night as the Tigers rallied for another comeback against the Angels. The Angels are 24th in bullpen ERA this season.
The Tigers should find success against Rodriguez, but if he shuts them down again, I like the Tigers' chances against the Angels' bullpen, provided Skubal keeps them in the game like Melton did last night. For that reason, I am pairing Skubal's strikeouts with the Tigers full-game moneyline instead of the first five innings. The Tigers have also won four of the last meetings in Anaheim.
Picks:
- Tarik Skubal 8+ Strikeouts
- Tigers Moneyline
Parlay Odds: +105, betMGM
