Alex Hinton’s Astros vs Orioles Preview
The Houston Astros head to Baltimore currently in possession of a 1.5 game lead over the Mariners in the AL West. However, they have the Phillies to thank for that after they swept the Mariners more than their own play. While the Mariners have lost five in a row, Houston has dropped five out of six since securing series victories over the Yankees and Red Sox.
The current skid began against the Orioles, who took two of three from the Astros last week in Houston. They secured shutouts in both victories, sending the Astros' offense on a downward spiral in the process. The Astros have been shut out in four of their past games. They were able to snap a 31-inning scoreless drought yesterday, but were unable to avoid the sweep in an 8-2 loss to the Tigers.
Since being reacquired at the trade deadline, Carlos Correa is hitting .333 with a .859 OPS. He has a hit in each of his last five and 14 of his last 16 games. However, he has received little help as Jose Altuve is currently in a 3-for-23 slump and trade deadline acquisition Jesus Sanchez is hitless in his last 16 at-bats.
That help may come in the form of slugger Yordan Alvarez, who is currently on a rehab assignment in Corpus Christi. Alvarez has been out since early May with a hand injury. He may be activated at some point this weekend, but next week is more likely. In the meantime, pitching may have to lead the way.
Jason Alexander will get the start for the Astros tonight and his numbers will not jump off the page thanks to a rough outing against the Dodgers. However, in three August starts, he has a 1.00 ERA in 18 innings with 15 strikeouts while allowing just seven hits. He helped the Astros defeat the Orioles 5-4 in extra innings last Saturday.
After consecutive playoff appearances, the Orioles entered 2025 with high expectations. At 14 games back in the AL East and eight back in the Wild Card race, the playoffs likely are not in the cards this season. However, the Orioles may be a team that contenders do not want to face down the stretch.
As mentioned, they won the series in Houston last weekend. They followed that up by sweeping a quick two-game set from the Red Sox in Boston. Their offense has led the way as they are nearly averaging five runs per game since the All-Star break and they are a game above .500 since then as well.
Recently, Baltimore called up its No. 1 prospect in catcher/first baseman Samuel Basallo. In his first three games, Basallo is 3-for-10 (.300) with five RBI. On Tuesday, he pinch hit in the 11th inning and had the go-ahead RBI on a groundout. He became the 10th player in the Expansion Era to start his career with five RBIs in his first 10 at-bats.
Adley Rutschman has not played since Sunday due to right abdominal discomfort. If he is out again, Basallo should continue to see time behind the plate. He continues Baltimore's youth movement along with young stars Gunnar Henderson and Jackson Holiday along with Dylan Beavers and Jeremiah Jackson, who were recently promoted as well.
The O's would love if Brandon Young could repeat his outing against the Astros. Last Friday, he took a perfect game into the eighth inning before it was broken up by former Oriole Ramon Urias. He finished with six strikeouts in eight innings and gave up just that one hit.
That has not been the norm for him as he picked up his first win of the year and sports a 5.68 ERA. Seeing him again so quickly should work in the Astros' favor, but it remains to be seen if their offense will continue to struggle.
Astros vs Orioles Prediction, Betting Analysis
Oddsmakers have tonight's game as a pick'em and given the quick turnaround of this matchup, I do not have a lean to either side. However, three players I like for hits are Correa, Henderson, and Yainer Diaz. Correa has recorded a hit in each of his last 10 road games and eight of his last 10 games overall. Diaz has a hit in four of his last five games and nine of his last 10 against the Orioles.
Meanwhile, Henderson is hitting .287 with a .895 OPS over the last month. He has a hit in eight of his last 10 games and he is hitting .313 at home this season. This trio gets us +135 odds on Fanatics.
