Astros vs Reds MLB Same-Game Parlay Playbook
Leg 1: NRFI
For the first leg of our SGP, I will be taking a shot on no run to be scored in the first inning of the game (NRFI).
Despite a very mediocre start to his 2026 campaign, I still have faith in Andrew Abbott, who has been sensational over his first few seasons in the Big Leagues.
Abbott is currently posting career-low numbers across the board, including a 5.13 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP.
Though he has undoubtedly been in the midst of the worst slump of his short career, I see Sunday’s interleague matchup as a prime bounce-back spot for the Reds’ 26-year-old.
Following consecutive seasons posting an ERA sub 3.80, Abbott had a tremendous 2025 season — finishing the year with one of the best ERA’s in all of baseball. The Reds’ lefty allowed just 53 earned runs across 166 innings.
Aside from the exceptional offensive production the Astros have gotten from Yordan Alvarez to start the season, the rest of a very young Houston lineup has really been struggling at the plate.
In addition to their inefficiency at the plate, Abbott has a phenomenal previous history versus this lineup, as Houston has produced just two hits in 13 at-bats against the Reds’ lefty.
While Sunday afternoon’s contest looks like a prime bounce-back spot for Abbott, Kai-Wei Teng has been quite impressive over his first few appearances in 2026.
The Taiwan product saw limited action in his first two campaigns in San Francisco, but has found a rhythm at the bump in his first year in Houston.
The Astros have been using their 27-year-old right-hander as an opener, which seems like a great fit for him thus far. He pieced together impressive outings against the Dodgers and Red Sox.
Teng has allowed no runs over his last four frames and has a very dominant high-spin sweeper that has caused problems for batters on both sides of the plate.
Given Abbott’s matchup with a struggling Astros’ lineup and the current form of Houston spot-starter Kai-Wei Teng, the NRFI will be a great building block for our SGP.
Leg 2: Elly De La Cruz Over 1.5 HRR
If you have read any of my previous SGP articles, you would know that I typically favor pairing two negatively correlated parlay legs, which extracts maximum value given the inverse relationship between the two events.
That said, I feel backing a player to find success at the plate will be a great pairing with no runs to be scored in the 1st inning of Sunday’s contest.
While Kai-Wei Teng has been very impressive, I don't expect the Astros youngster to spend more than a couple frames on the bump, which opens up an opportunity for Reds’ superstar Elly De La Cruz to pounce upon a struggling Houston bullpen.
The 24-year-old is off to a scorching start to his fourth season in the Big Leagues as Elly has smashed 10 homers and 29 RBIs over the Reds’ first 40 games, ranking among the top 12 MLB hitters in both categories.
The Cincinnati slugger is already one of the best players on the planet, with a unique combination of tremendous power on both sides of the plate and unprecedented speed. De la Cruz consistently produces incredibly hard-hit balls with an exit velocity of upwards of 115 MPH.
Given his power, exceptional base-running ability, and stolen-base prowess, I favor targeting the Reds’ youngsters in the HRR (Hits + Runs + RBIs) player-prop market.
