Collin Whitchurch’s Angels vs Padres Preview
The Angels are not a fun team to bet on, but when I do, it's likely going to come when Jose Soriano is pitching more often than not.
I think we're getting a little bit of a discount on this price because Soriano hasn't gotten off to the greatest start to the season. His ERA is around 4.00 and he's seen an increase in walks with not nearly enough strikeouts.
Advanced stats say Soriano has been a bit unlucky, however, which is particularly interesting since Soriano's profile is that of a pitcher who will commonly outperform his peripherals given the fact that he pitches to contact and induces a large amount of ground balls.
All that tells me that Soriano is an underrated pitcher who has seen poor luck so far this season, so I feel good backing him against a scary San Diego offense that is nonetheless going to be overrated a bit by the hot start to the season.
We also haven't seen the best of Dylan Cease this year, and given the price on this game it's easy to envision a scenario where he throws seven shutout innings with 12 strikeouts, looks like his old self, and the hapless Angels never stand a chance.
I think the Angels' offense is a bit underrated here as well, though, and is being priced more like the full-season numbers than what the team brings to the table tonight.
Even without Mike Trout, the Halos offense has looked more competent of late than it has all year, and I don't think it's really smoke and mirrors.
Zach Neto is one of the most underrated players in baseball at the top of the lineup, and Yoan Moncada since returning from injury has put together a nice little streak here of looking like the All-Star-caliber player people once saw in him when he was a top-ranked prospect.
I don't believe that latter will continue, but Moncada has always been the type of player to go through hot streaks and he's certainly going through one right now.
In a little more than two weeks' worth of games, he's controlling the strike zone with a walk rate north of 15% and absolutely mashing when he makes contact as seven of his 11 hits have gone for extra bases.
Angels vs Padres Prediction, Betting Analysis
Sportsbooks are underrating both Soriano's ability to limit hard contact in the air and the state of the Angels' offense.
They're obviously riding high from Monday night's insane comeback against the Padres' bullpen, but while Cease is a scary pitcher to have to go through, I have enough faith in this team that I would make them closer to +150 for tonight's game.
Also in a fun little wrinkle, a red-hot Moncada against Cease pits two former White Sox teammates, so if you want to get some extra juicy odds, parlay the Angels moneyline with a Moncada home run.
Pick: Angels Moneyline (+170 or better)

I'm betting the Angels on the moneyline at +170 or better.
Run Line (Spread)
While I side with the Angels tonight, I'm staying away from the run line.
Over/Under
I don't see any value in tonight's total.
