Giants vs Red Sox MLB Betting Preview
The Giants are playing for pride at this point. They have the fourth-worst record in baseball and the second-worst in the NL, ahead of only the lowly Rockies.
After dealing starters Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle at the deadline, the Giants are giving some younger options a shot at making a strong impression. One of those players is Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson, who tossed a pair of scoreless frames in his MLB debut this week.
Wilkinson's fastball sits in the low 90s along with a changeup and slider. I'm curious about his long-term viability with his fastball. Pitching in the big leagues is tough with below-average velocity.
Not to mention, the Giants only had Wilkinson throw two innings in his debut — if he has another short outing, that'll expose this shaky San Francisco bullpen against a strong offensive team.
Lineup-wise, the Giants are very top-heavy. Since July 15th, they have just an 82 wRC+ (27th in MLB). No players on the roster have a wRC+ above 110, and four (Jung Hoo Lee, Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, and Bryce Eldridge) are in the 100-110 range. Those are the only real threats in this San Francisco lineup.
On the mound for the Red Sox is Jake Bennett, a southpaw who burst onto the scene, posting a 2.35 ERA with a 2.99 xERA and 3.01 FIP in his first nine MLB starts. So, it's a bit troubling for him to have a 5.63 ERA in his last five outings, but don't fret; he's been quite unlucky — his xERA is 3.56, and his FIP is 3.83.
Perhaps Bennett is leveling out a bit, but even if he's a mid-3.00s ERA pitcher at his core, that's a very valuable starter, and he could have a strong day against this Giants lineup.
Bennett has a lot of enticing qualities. He throws a lot of strikes, ranking in the 94th percentile in walk rate. He also induces tons of weak contact, ranking in the 71st percentile in barrel rate and 65th in hard-hit rate.
The Red Sox's sudden turnaround was largely due to their offense becoming one of the best in the league. Since July 15th, they rank second in MLB with a 120 wRC+. Their plate approach has been strong. They're striking out just 20% of the time and walking 9% of the time, showcasing their ability to make pitchers work. The real shocker is the sudden surge of power, as Boston has a league-leading 46 home runs.
Boston has six lineup regulars who have a wRC+ over 100, led by the dominant Willson Contreras with a 166. Don't sleep on the trio of Wilyer Abreu, Nick Sogard, and Andruw Monasterio. All three of them play a key role in the Red Sox's identity at the dish, striking out less than 20% of the time and walking over 9% of the time.

Giants vs Red Sox Pick, Betting Analysis
The Red Sox enter as significant favorites in this series finale, sitting as -231 ML favorites. If you think Boston is winning, laying the juice on -231 probably isn't worth the squeeze as anything more than a parlay piece. So, I'm rolling with Boston -1.5 at -105. Nine of the Giants' last 10 losses were by multiple runs. Baseball is a weird game and huge underdogs win often, but I can't justify a play on the Giants here.
We got a glimpse of how terrible their bullpen is on Saturday. They gave up three runs in the ninth to blow the game, and they'll likely have to cover six or seven innings if Wilkinson has another short outing. That makes Boston -1.5 an obvious play to me.
Pick: Red Sox -1.5 (Play to -130)
