The Eastern Conference Finals are tipping off at Madison Square Garden, and the highly anticipated matchup between the New York Knicks and the Cleveland Cavaliers is already the subject of intense speculation among Polymarket traders.

Beyond the traditional action on who will advance to the Finals, another market is starting to gain traction: who will be the Eastern Conference MVP?

Traders' favorites

The “NBA Playoffs: Eastern Conference Finals MVP” market opened on April 13, and traders are currently favoring the Knicks’ Jalen Brunson as the frontrunner to take home the Eastern Conference award named after the legendary Larry Bird.

Brunson’s contract price is backed by his recent performances, as he was a crucial component behind the Knicks’ offense that swept both the Hawks and the 76ers. For Polymarket traders, he is the most stable asset in the field, representing an interesting position for high-volume participants.

The problem is that, as with any favorite, to make a considerable profit you have to invest a significant amount of money. That’s why some traders are looking for low-priced, high-potential alternatives.

Donovan Mitchell has been instrumental for the Cavaliers, so it's no surprise that his stock—while second to Brunson—has also attracted a significant number of traders looking for a “Yes” contract that may appreciate during the course of the Finals.

Trading at a significant discount compared to Brunson, Mitchell’s MVP contract offers massive leverage. Cleveland enters the series as the underdog, so betting on Mitchell can be a proxy bet on a Cleveland upset. If the Cavaliers win at the Garden, Mitchell's “Yes” stock will spike, which may result in massive shifts in the market, as traders can buy and sell their positions at any point before the settlement date.

If you are comfortable with slimmer odds, Evan Mobley, the 2024–25 Defensive Player of the Year, offers an interesting position if you believe that the Cavs' defense will have a decisive influence on the outcome of the Finals.

What moves the line?

While it's an individual prop, the MVP trophy is also a proxy for team success, as the Most Valuable Player almost exclusively hails from the winning squad. Traders are engaging in a dual calculation: predicting which team will advance and which player will carry his squad to the Finals.

The Knicks hold a crucial rest advantage that will likely be more evident as the series goes on. Keep in mind that Polymarket is a highly liquid alternative to traditional betting that reacts in real-time to any development. If Evan Mobley gets injured or Mitchell gets into foul trouble early in Game 1, the market sentiment will reflect that.

Another thing to keep an eye out for is how the Cavs' defensive performance may affect Brunson’s shot at the MVP. Dean Wade has excellent numbers guarding Brunson historically, and Max Strus showed he is a competitive defender against Cade Cunningham.
