Clemson vs UNC College Basketball Betting Preview
Clemson has finally appeared to have broken out of its late-season slump, which saw the Tigers lose five of six down the stretch, with a normally reliable iron-clad defense fading and an offense that could not execute in the half-court setup.
I was impressed by how the defense played last night against Wake Forest, as the Tigers avenged a mid-February road loss in dominating fashion. Clemson seeks to make it two for two in the ACC tournament when they square off against North Carolina tonight in Charlotte.
UNC also has to be feeling good about its play over the last three weeks. The Tar Heels closed the regular season winning four of five games to end the regular season. A couple of ACC-Tournament wins would solidify the Heels' position on the 6-line in the NCAA Tournament.
The first game between these two came right down to the wire, and we should have a great game tonight in the ACC nightcap.
There is currently some variation in this line. Depending on where you have access to place the wager, you can find either Clemson or UNC at +1.5. The total is set at 140.5. I am going to be on the Tigers here.
Clemson’s late-season struggles stemmed from the defense not being able to generate a ton of turnovers or force its opponents into bad shots on the defensive end.
While I am not going to conclude the issues are completely fixed after just one solid showing in the ACC Tournament against Wake Forest, I was very encouraged by the defensive intensity displayed. Clemson forced a dozen turnovers, had five shot rejections, and did well to keep the Deacs out of the paint and off the stripe.
Clemson is one of the best defensive rebounding teams in the country, ranking 14th nationally in offensive rebound rate allowed, and this defense does a good job of forcing long possessions.
The first meeting played to just 65 possessions, and UNC scored just 27 first-half points. Carolina was frustrated at home against this defense and was trailing a good majority of the second half before a 12-0 Heels run flipped the script.
Clemson vs UNC Pick, Betting Analysis
I like the matchup for Clemson here. UNC does not force a ton of turnovers defensively, so an assumption that the Tigers will be able to set the pace and keep this game slower-moving is a safe one.
UNC also has the worst three-point defense in the conference, and Clemson is going to shoot from deep. This roster has guys like Jestin Porter, Dillon Hunter and Butta Johnson who can string it from the 3-point line. Clemson made 10 threes yesterday, and I think we'll see more positive regression in their shooting.
Every shot is going to be highly contested when UNC is on offense. The Heels have been frustrated at times in lower-possession defensive bouts, and it plays better when they are free to get out in space and run with the ball.
I don’t think we see their ability to do that here today. Clemson is excellent at dictating the tempo and forcing its opponents to operate in the half-court, often deep into the possession clock. This is going to be a slow burner, and Clemson will be more comfortable.
I like Clemson to get the win. Shop around for the best price, as there are still some Clemson +1.5 out there in the market. Strap in for a fun game tonight in ACC Tournament Play.
My Pick: Clemson +1.5 (-120, DraftKings)
