Coastal Carolina vs Duke College Basketball Preview
Coastal Carolina Basketball
Following an impressive 2025-26 campaign that saw Coastal Carolina win 19 games, head coach Justin Gray was forced to significantly overhaul the team’s roster.
Given that Gray returns just three players from last year’s lineup, he was forced to acquire 12 new players, both through the incoming freshman class and via the transfer portal.
Sophomore guard Tristan Thompson was the only returnee featured in the Chanticleers’ starting lineup on Monday night, while both DaJohn Craig and Derrick Green saw some minutes off the bench.
Coastal’s influx of fresh talent was put to the test in the team’s season-opener versus Eastern Michigan, with Trey Perry putting on an impressive performance with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists.
Jaylen Cross recorded 10 points and eight rebounds of his own, and he'll be a key contributor for the Chanticleers this season.
Despite building an early seven-point lead and heading into the locker room with the lead, the Chanticleers were outclassed in the second half behind a spectacular 34-point and 13-rebound effort from Eastern Michigan forward Mohammad Habhab.
Duke Basketball
After a 35-3 campaign that ended in the Elite Eight with UConn's Braylon Mullins drilling a 35-footer, it's safe to say that Duke head coach Jon Scheyer is out for revenge in his fifth year at the helm.
While Duke is typically accustomed to massive roster turnover in the transfer portal era, the Blue Devils return a great deal of last season's production and boasts one of the best rotations I've seen in quite some time.
Despite losing the likes of Isaiah Evans and Maliq Brown to the NBA draft, Scheyer fortunately retained Patrick Ngongba II, Dame Sarr, Caleb Foster and Cayden Boozer.
Per usual, Duke also secured several five-star recruits, including Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr and Bryson Howard.
As if a massive frontcourt featuring Ngongba and Williams (fifth-ranked in the 2026 class) weren't enough, 17-year-old Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje actually reclassified to join this unit.
Despite my lack of fondness for this Duke program, the Blue Devils are one of two teams that I have preseason futures’ exposure on (Texas Tech), given the outrageous talent Scheyer’s bunch boasts at both ends of the floor.
While Duke destroyed Army by 34 points on Monday night, the Blue Devils' margin of victory actually could have been far greater.
Unfortunately for the Chanticleers, I don't expect the head coach to show that same courtesy on Thursday night.
Coastal Carolina vs. Duke Pick, Betting Analysis
Upon assessing Thursday night’s showdown, the statistical output from Eastern Michigan's Habhab reveals some glaring holes in the Chanticleers’ defensive frontcourt, which should put them into deep trouble against the Blue Devils.
Given this, I'm very concerned for Coastal Carolina.
I fully expect the Blue Devils to lay an absolute beatdown on Thursday night for a nice confidence-booster prior to the Michigan State matchup next week.
I feel very confident backing Duke to cover both its first-half and full-game spreads.
Pick: Duke -40.5 | Duke 1H ATS
