Duke Basketball

A slow start against Texas didn't impact Duke’s ability to land in the win column. Texas played tough, down by just a point at halftime, but Duke flexed its muscles late.

The win did show some signs of trouble, namely a loss in the turnover battle.

The thing that Duke will have over most teams this season is its length and ability to out-rebound its opponent.

They out-rebounded Texas by 13, which makes sense given that Duke ranks fourth in average height. Duke also won't necessarily beat you in transition; it plays at a controlled pace, ranking 290th on the young season in adjusted tempo per 100 possessions.

But the Blue Devils' efficiency is what makes them hard to beat.

Their big flaw is their youth. Ranked outside the top 300 in Division I, they start just one upperclassman, junior Caleb Foster, with the rest of their top five including two freshmen and two sophomores.

Duke also lined up the beginning of the season well, as it followed a Texas win with Western Carolina, Army and Indiana State. That keeps it well-rested before a battle with Kansas in the Champions Classic.

Army will come into this game grossly overmatched. This is a team that will play slow and controlled, but its efficiency will often come into question.

In the first two games of the season, the Black Knights actually were strong on the glass. However, this is an area where they'll struggle all season, as they rank 315th in overall size.

At 1-1, they're not ready for the length and physicality that Duke will bring.

They’re also not that much better in terms of Division I experience coming into the game. They’re a younger team than we're typically accustomed to seeing for a military academy.

Duke vs. Army Betting Analysis

This is a huge spread. And it’s not a spot I would typically like to be on. We know that Duke will win this game, but are we willing to lay 31.5?

I’m not. Duke most likely shoots better, gets more boards and dictates the pace. But there's a strong connection between the schools, and I’m not sure head coach Jon Scheyer is looking to embarrass the Army team.

I expect him to call off the dogs and for this game to fall around 20-25 points. Duke will play a slow game, and any extra possessions, especially late in the game, will result in more clock running out.

I would be willing to take the Army if it's getting anything above 30 points.

My Pick: Army +31.5 (Play to +30.5)
