Hofstra vs Towson Betting Preview
Hofstra Basketball
The CAA schedule enters its second week, and this matchup pit two teams who couldn't have had more different starts.
Hofstra has started 2-0, with competitive wins against rivals Drexel and Campbell.
After a season that started with two losses to UCF and Iona, Hofstra lost just twice over its last 13 games, and both losses were within five points.
The Pride have experienced that success behind Cruz Davis, the junior guard from Texas. He averages 21.2 points per game and is aided by freshman guard Preston Edmead, who also pours in 14.2 points a night.
They don’t have another double-digit scorer, but the Pride average 77.7 points per game. They rank 26th in the nation in 3-point shooting, at 37.9%. For reference, Towson hits just 25.6% from deep.
The Pride rank in the top 93 in both offensive and defensive effective shooting percentage. They also do well at the charity strike, hitting at a tick above 74%.
This will be a big discrepancy in the box score, considering that Towson shoots free throws at just 65.5%.
Towson Basketball
Towson has played the much tougher strength of schedule between the two teams, which could be a big reason why Hofstra has the better metrics.
But even fair losses to Houston by 17, Kansas by 24 and UCF by 25 can't mask defeats to William & Mary, Hampton and Monmouth.
The Tigers put up just 48 points at home in their last game against a 6-8 Monmouth team, so it's not surprising their metrics aren't up to par.
They struggle to shoot the ball well, so no matter how decent their defensive effective field goal percentage is, they rarely can overcome it.
While they do have Tyler Tejada (16 PPG), they don’t have anyone on their roster who will be able to guard Davis.
Hofstra vs. Towson Betting Analysis
It’s not much of a surprise that I'm taking the Pride. Their moneyline is up to +116 on FanDuel at the time of writing, and it's worth the risk instead of taking them at +105 (-102).
I'll take the better team, in better form, against an opponent that's been drowning in early conference play.
Both play at similar speeds and styles, but the overall shooting will favor the Pride. Take them to win the game straight up. If this swings to anything at minus juice, take the spread up to -2.
My Pick: Hofstra ML +116
