Howard vs Drexel College Basketball Betting Preview
Howard Basketball
Howard comes in off back-to-back wins against NC A&T and Hampton, and it defeated non-Division I Bowie State during the month of December.
The Bison have played very spirited basketball against three fellow HBCU opponents and look to extend their winning streak to four games as they head to Philadelphia to face Drexel.
The Bison struggle to shoot the ball effectively, and while Bryce Harris is averaging 20.2 points per game, the well dries up at times when looking at other scoring options.
Cam Gillus has been solid over the last three games, but he was inconsistent before then. Alex Cotton and Cedric Taylor III are averaging double figures, but they struggle to knock down shots consistently. Overall, the Bison have struggled to find good shots and they turn the ball over.
Defensively, the Bison have ratcheted up the intensity while holding four of their last five opponents under 70 points. The Bison turn you over and play an aggressive style, which can lead to the opponent spending a lot of time at the foul line.
Drexel Basketball
Drexel comes in still searching for an identity, as the Dragons have really struggled to do anything well, which is a driver to their 4-6 overall record.
Shane Blakeney is the only Dragon averaging more than 10 points per game, and Drexel doesn’t have scorers who can consistently hit shots.
Josh Reed is reliable off the bench and Garfield Turner has been good in limited action, but the players who take the most shots have by far the worst shooting percentages on the team.
The defense has guarded well and the Dragons keep you off the offensive boards, but Drexel fouls a ton and is sub-300 in defensive free-throw rate.
Howard vs. Drexel Betting Analysis
We get an 11 a.m. ET tip in Philly for this one on Tuesday morning. The line opened Drexel -5.5 with a total of 139.5, and I like the under in this matchup.
Drexel hasn’t played a game in 10 days, and we could see some cold shooting after such a long layoff. The Dragons don't shoot proficiently anyway, and they play at a very slow pace, with their last five games averaging 67 possessions or fewer.
Howard generally allows its opponent to dictate the tempo of its games, so I would expect this one to be played at a slower pace.
Howard should cause some problems with its defense. Drexel struggles with giveaways, and Howard is 23rd nationally in forcing turnovers, doing so 22% of the time. I would expect the Bison defense to frustrate Drexel and get it deep into the possession clock often.
Neither team can shoot well, and I would expect a high number of empty offensive possessions and few second-chance opportunities.
I wouldn’t expect either of these teams to push the tempo under normal circumstances, but I certainly wouldn’t expect it with an 11 a.m. ET start time.
This should be a tight game with a slow pace, and I don't expect either team to be in the 70s here. Go low.
My Pick: Under 139.5 (Play to 138)
