Marquette vs Wisconsin College Basketball Betting Preview
It’s safe to say Marquette needed the transfer portal. Head coach Shaka Smart has become infamous for his insistence on ignoring college basketball’s free agent pool and instead building his program from within, the old-fashioned way.
That worked last season, but it’s been a trainwreck thus far in 2025-26. The Golden Eagles have lost all four games to their quality opponents and just survived an overtime scare against Valpo.
Wisconsin has had a so-so start, sporting a 2-2 mark in its biggest games, although it’s been far better than Marquette. The Badgers are a big favorite in this Saturday afternoon tilt.
Scoring has been hard to come by for Marquette — its offense has been Chase Ross and little else. The Golden Eagles need to score in transition to put up points efficiently, as their half-court offense tends to stagnate.
Per Synergy, Marquette is scoring 0.879 PPP in the half-court (252nd nationally) versus 1.141 PPP in transition (135th).
Nobody in the country gets to the rim more than the Golden Eagles. Unfortunately, they rank 342nd in field goal percentage at the cup, per CBB Analytics. Leads have sputtered this season due to offensive futility.
Wisconsin matches up well defensively to stop what Marquette wants to do. The Badgers rank in the 83rd percentile nationally in PPP allowed in transition and rank 29th in field goal percentage allowed at the rim.
The Badgers have plenty of size and ball-handling to combat Marquette’s pressure schemes. On offense, Wisconsin bombs away from deep at a top-15 rate (though it’s just 178th in 3-point percentage).
The Badgers run a ton of pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop actions, utilizing their versatile bigs to their advantage.
Marquette has fared well stopping ball-screen action and has mobile bigs to guard Wisconsin out on the perimeter.
Each team can more or less combat what the other does on the offensive end, and that’s good news for the 'dog with a massive spread.
Marquette hasn't looked the part yet of an NCAA Tournament team, but that’s still the level it can play at once the engines start humming.
The Golden Eagles have their backs against the wall against this rival, and Smart has a great track record as a scrappy underdog.
Wisconsin wins, but Marquette covers.
My Pick: Marquette +10.5
