Maryland Basketball

The Terrapins have had a very rough first year under Buzz Williams. Maryland has been hit with the injury bug over and over again, and even when it's been fully healthy, this team hasn't been very competitive.

Recently, the Terps have continued to struggle mightily on the offensive end. Maryland scored 70 points just once in eight games in February, despite winning three matchups during the month.

Part of that is due to Maryland's turtle pace, but much of it is due to inefficient offense.

Both of those style issues are a misfit for trying to keep a game close against Wisconsin.

The biggest issue for Wednesday's matchup with the Badgers will be perimeter defense, though.

Wisconsin shoots 3s on 51.3% of its possessions, the eighth-highest rate in the country, and not only does Maryland allow opponents to shoot triples at a 42.9% rate, but it also allow opponents to make 3s at the 33rd-highest rate in the country (36.8%).

When you pair those two things together — along with the Terrapins' overall struggles this season — it's easy to see why this spread is so wide and how Maryland could be headed for a disastrous night.

Wisconsin Basketball

Wisconsin looked like it had finally caught fire when it beat both Illinois and Michigan State in the same week, but the Badgers have alternated wins and losses after those two huge upsets.

Wisconsin's two most recent games were a split road trip to the Pacific Northwest. The Badgers lost 85-71 to Oregon, and then demolished Washington, 90-73.

Wisconsin's successes are almost entirely derived from 3-point shooting and clean offense. The Badgers have the eighth-best turnover rate in the country, the eighth-highest 3-point rate and they knock those attempts down at a solid 35.5% clip.

Wisconsin will shoot a ton of 3s regardless of its opponent, but Wednesday is a prime opportunity for the Badgers to have success from downtown.

The only team in the same stratosphere as Maryland in the Big Ten when it comes to horrible 3-point defense is Penn State. While the Terrapins rank 333rd (a.k.a 33rd-worst) at defending the 3-point line, the Nittany Lions rank 359th (seventh-worst).

When Wisconsin played Penn State earlier this season, the Badgers shot 15-for-35 (42.9%) from deep in a 98-71 road win.

I expect more of the same ridiculous shooting numbers on Wednesday, with Wisconsin looking to secure a commanding victory playing in front of its home crowd on Senior Night.

While I won't say Wisconsin will hit the century mark, the Badgers could easily hit the 90-point threshold for the 13th time this season.

Maryland vs. Wisconsin Betting Analysis

There are mismatches, and then there's whatever this game should be called.

Maryland is bad to begin with, but its biggest weakness perfectly aligns with Wisconsin's biggest strength.

The Badgers are always a scary team to rely on, as 3-point percentage can be an extremely volatile number from game to game. But when facing a defense as porous as the Terrapins', it feels like a good spot for Wisconsin to have a great shooting night.

The over in this game is tempting, but Maryland can produce such poor offensive nights that I would rather just stick with the Badgers to dominate.

My Pick: Wisconsin -14.5 (Play to -16.5)
