Minnesota vs Purdue College Basketball Betting Preview
Minnesota Basketball
Minnesota is in its first year with Niko Medved on the sideline. The Colorado State hire started 4-1, but the Gophers have since lost four of their last five games.
Minnesota likes to slow things down, as it ranks 354th in adjusted tempo.
While slow play is the norm of Medved's offense, the Rams never ranked outside the top 300 in terms of adjusted tempo during his time at Colorado State.
The Gophers rank second in getting to the free-throw line. The issue is that they aren’t knocking down the freebies at a high rate.
Purdue Basketball
Purdue had looked almost unbeatable through its first eight games. The Boilers had won six of those eight by at least double digits, including big wins against Alabama and Texas Tech. They won the game against Tech by 30.
Now they come in off a big defeat on their home court against Iowa State. The Cyclones dominated the glass and they shot 47.8% from 3 while knocking down 11 triples.
This Boilermakers offense still ranks first in adjusted efficiency, so after scoring just 58 points in their last effort, we can expect them to have a lot of positive regression.
They also do a really good job of rebounding, ranking sixth in offensive boards. 41.8% of their offensive possessions that result in a shot also result in an offensive rebound.
That means they'll most likely win the shot volume battle, and for a team ranked 14th in 3-point percentage, expect a lot of second-chance points.
This is a veteran squad, as it ranks 21st in Division I experience.
Purdue paces 334th in adjusted tempo, too.
After the Iowa State blowout, Purdue will look to bounce back as 18.5-point favorites.
Minnesota vs. Purdue Betting Analysis
This is a spread that sits just where it makes it a hard read. I’m not sure I like either side enough here. If the Gophers and Boilermakers play this game controlled, it may be too large of a spread to cover.
But I do like the under. Both team rank outside of the top 300 in terms of adjusted pace on a per 100 possession basis.
We can also exclude a lot of points with the clocked stop. Purdue does a terrible job at getting to the free-throw line, and Minnesota just doesn’t hit them at a high enough rate.
This will be a slow game where every possession will mean a little bit more. I’ll take the under.
My Pick: Under 142.5 (Play to 140.5)
