Princeton vs Bradley College Basketball Betting Preview
Princeton Basketball
On the surface, it would appear that Princeton head coach Mitch Henderson is seeking to run more and push the pace with his Tigers early in the season.
We saw some of that last year in the non-conference with Princeton, but I think the uptick this season is a byproduct of who it's played.
Princeton has faced Akron, Kansas and Iona this year, three teams that want to play in transition much more frequently than in the half-court. The Tigers haven't been able to slow these teams down, but they won't have that issue with Bradley on Monday.
We've seen the Tigers compete well so far in games for a half, but they've faded down the stretch.
The Tigers aren't as strong of a shooting team as previous versions, specifically from beyond the arc. Princeton is making just 30% of its 3-point shots, and that's an issue when you take as many as it does.
The Tigers run the “Princeton Offense” better than anyone, but the style requires sound execution, crisp passing and great shotmaking.
When they don’t fall, the offensive output can be ugly, which we've seen in the second halves of games this season.
Defensively, Princeton hasn’t played too badly, but it's been outclassed by more athletic foes and has seen that play out by not being able to defend inside the paint. Princeton is allowing 58% of 2-point shots, which ranks 300th nationally.
The Tigers aren’t going to turn you over on defense, but they rebound well, defend without fouling and run you off the 3-point line really well for an Ivy League team.
Bradley Basketball
Bradley has created such a distinct identity under Brian Wardle. We generally know what the product should look like on the floor for the Braves: tough, hard-nosed defense, a fun offensive system and a high offensive efficiency despite playing a slow pace.
We haven’t seen a lot of that this year, as the Braves have struggled with their offensive continuity and shooting from the outside. In its three losses this year, Bradley has made just 17-of-77 3-point shots, and it doesn't see a lot of second-chance points.
Jaquan Johnson and AJ Smith are the primary scorers, and the Braves are complemented by a cast of other characters that can score when called on.
This offense plays well as a unit and Bradley protects the basketball well while limiting wasted possessions. We should see a slow pace in this one, as the Braves are accustomed to playing sub-70 possession games.
The Bradley defense has been solid this season, and the Braves are excellent at getting opponents deep into the shot clock and forcing mistakes.
Bradley is turning over its opponents on 24% of its possessions and defends well against the 3.
Princeton isn't as athletic in the frontcourt as some of the teams that Bradley has faced this season, so challenging the shooters will be key in this matchup.
Princeton vs. Bradley Betting Analysis
This total came out at 143.5 and is already on the move downward. I don't believe Princeton wants to play this game at a high-possession level, and we know Bradley will oblige. Thus, I'm going to dive in on the under.
Both of these offenses are going to grind out the clock here and seek to take high-percentage shots versus fast shots early in the possession. Bradley is going to force you to play slow and really test your patience on offense, and its aggressive style should give Princeton plenty of problems.
The defensive numbers look bad for Princeton and those stats would suggest a team that wants to run-and-gun. But that's more a byproduct of the Tigers' opponents as opposed to the style Henderson wants to play.
I expect this one to slow down considerably and be played at about 65 possessions.
While we should see a ton of 3-point shots in this game, neither team is shooting the ball well from deep and both defenses have defended the 3 very well.
I would guess we see both offenses struggle in this one. I trust the Bradley defense to come up big during the last four minutes, where the Braves should ultimately pull away from Princeton. However, this game should be played in the 60s on Monday.
My Pick: Under 142.5
