UNC Asheville vs Wichita State College Basketball Betting Preview
UNC Asheville Basketball
Mike Morrell has turned UNC Asheville into a consistent winner and a perennial Big South contender. The Bulldogs won 20+ games in back-to-back seasons and have returning players who could decide the fate of this year's club.
Leading the way is preseason Big South Player of Year Toyaz Solomon. The uber-athletic forward averaged 15.7 points with 7.2 rebounds per game on an efficient 61% shooting. I'll be interested to see how effective Solomon is against Wichita State's tough defense.
The Bulldogs have two other players who could vie for all-league honors. One is Kameron Taylor, a sophomore who averaged 8.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. He could be a real difference-maker in terms of matching the Shockers' athleticism here.
The other is Justin Wright, who missed last year with an injury. The 6-foot-1 guard was a standout performer at Loyola Marymount in 2023-24, where he averaged 11.1 points per game. With Jordan Marsh leaving for USC, it could be Wright who replaces a near 20-point-per-game scorer.
What's the key to the Bulldogs covering or hunting down the upset?
Rebounding is the biggest one. They were a dreadful rebounding team last year, ranking 341st nationally in defensive rebounding rate.
In this matchup, the guards will have to rebound well, which their guards didn't do last year. The length advantage will give Wichita State an edge on the boards, but UNC Asheville has to keep it close.
In hopes of adding more size, the Bulldogs brought in 6-foot-10 forward David Hermes, and perhaps 7-foot-1 center Sage Tolentino will play a role in slowing down the two big Shockers.
Wichita State Basketball
It was a real tale of two seasons for Wichita State in 2024-25. The Shockers began the year at 10-3, then fell to 11-10, won six straight and cratered down the stretch.
From that squad, Wichita State lost its most important players. Several were gone anyway due to exhausting eligibility, but Quincy Ballard and Corey Washington — arguably the two most important players — hit the portal.
The Shockers need to buy into defense this year. Their portal haul included a pair of defensive aces in SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Karon Boyd and Monmouth transfer Jaret Valencia. As long as 7-foot-2 big man Will Berg and 6-foot-10 Emmanuel Okorafor hold their own, scoring on Wichita State will be tough.
Both Okorafor and Berg provide high-major experience, which should help throughout the season. Neither will be what Ballard was, but Wichita State will need to impose its length today.
Offensively, most of Wichita State's scoring will come from Kenyon Giles and Michael Gray Jr. Giles could be a great value version of what Max Abmas was for Paul Mills at Oral Roberts. Giles is a 5-foot-10 guard who averaged 15 points per game and shot 40% from 3 last season.
I'd be surprised if the Shockers have a good offensive team. Assuming Boyd and Valencia start with one of the bigs, that's three players who don't add much scoring.
UNC Asheville vs. Wichita State Betting Analysis
I'll take the points with UNC Asheville, and I also think the Bulldogs are a live 'dog.
I don't love this Wichita State team and view it as pretty one-dimensional. If Giles and Gray struggle, anything can happen. Neither were overly efficient from the field at their prior stops and both are more perimeter-focused anyway.
The Bulldogs' big three of Solomon, Taylor and Wright could vault them to a potential road upset. I expect a very close game, either way.
The Shockers don't have the offensive weapons to blow out a solid team like UNC Asheville.
My Pick: UNC Asheville +7.5
