Wofford vs VMI College Basketball Betting Preview

Wofford Basketball

Wofford comes into this one after suffering a tough home loss against East Tennessee State on Sunday in a game that was delayed a day due to weather.

The Terriers were without two of their best players, including sensational sophomore Kahmare Holmes, who leads the team in scoring while averaging 19 points per game.

Luke Flynn, who averages 6.6 points and 4.5 rebounds, was also out and has been for some time, but the Wofford offense looked especially wonky without Holmes in the mix.

While Wofford shouldn’t struggle too badly against VMI — which has the worst defense in the SoCon — I don’t know that we'll see as much firepower out of the Terriers until Holmes returns.

The Wofford defense has been a mixed bag, but generally has played well against non-post dominant opponents. VMI shoots more 3-point shots than anyone in the country and has the second-fewest points generated from inside the arc nationally.

The Terriers don't allow a ton of second-chance opportunities and definitely shouldn’t against VMI. Wofford doesn't have a ton of size in the paint, but the defense should match up well schematically with the Keydets, who want to spread you out and let it fly from deep.

VMI Basketball

VMI has lost eight games in a row in conference play and sits at just 6-17 overall this season, with three non-Division I wins on its resume.

Two Keydets average double digits in scoring, including TJ Johnson at 18.6 points and seven boards per contest and Linus Holmstrom with 10.3 points per game.

The Keydets shoot more 3-point shots than anyone in the country, having thrown up 762 on the season.

VMI doesn't operate overly quickly on offense and has rarely put together strong offensive performances in succession. In its last game against Mercer, VMI buried 16 3-point shots and scored 81 points, its highest output of the season in league play.

The VMI defense has been a problem for years, but this rendition is especially weak. The Keydets are struggling to defend the inside and are a poor offensive rebounding team, allowing 40% of opponent misses to be corralled by the offense.

Johnson isn't overtly domineering in the post and reserve center Kaden Stuckey plays hard but hasn’t had a tremendous impact while playing limited minutes.

Wofford vs. VMI Betting Analysis

This line opened up at Wofford -11.5. The total opened at 155.5 and has been bet down to 152.5. I like the under in this matchup.

I'm not confident that VMI can put together back-to-back good shooting efforts, as the Keydets haven't shown that type of consistency all season. We know we're going to see a ton of 3-point shots in this matchup, but VMI is still just 308th nationally in 3-point percentage.

An abundance of misses often results in empty offensive possessions, as the Keydets are ill-equipped to secure offensive rebounds.

Wofford is likely to be without Holmes in this matchup and that'll inhibit the Terriers' scoring output. Holmes had been unbelievable in SoCon play while scoring 20 or more points in six of his last seven games.

Nils Machowski is capable of stepping up and the offense should run through him in this game, but several other players are going to have to execute for Wofford to have success.

VMI doesn’t play at a fast tempo, and I would expect Wofford to slow the pace down on the road against an opponent it hasn't faced against this season. Also, you have to consider that it's without its best player. We've already seen some market steam to the under, and I agree with the move here. Go low.

My Pick: Under 151.5
