Coastal Carolina vs Marshall NCAAF Preview
Only one defense looked worse than Marshall’s on Saturday: Colorado State, and the Rams actually fired their defensive coordinator mid-game.
There are three things you generally can’t fix in-season: size in the trenches, team speed and tackling. You recruit the first two and train the third.
Marshall’s glaring problems check those boxes. The Herd rank 126th in tackling and are giving up 185 rushing yards per game. James Madison ran through them, and they couldn’t stop it.
They also surrender explosives with alarming regularity. That’s dangerous against a Coastal team with a big-play quarterback like Deuce Bailey, who can hit the home-run ball and put up north of four touchdowns in a hurry.
Still, don’t write off Marshall’s offense. Even with a lackluster second half against JMU, it still put up 444 total yards.
Quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was banged up, and if the game had been close, he could’ve come back in. He’s the critical piece because he gives Marshall options and keeps defenses guessing.

Coastal Carolina vs Marshall NCAAF Pick
Weather could be a factor this weekend. It could be wet, but Huntington sits far enough north that we likely won’t get the driving hurricane winds.
That matters because while we don’t fear the rain, we fear the wind. Rain muddles things, but wind blows up passing games and kickoff strategies.
Marshall can move the ball when healthy, but the defensive issue of tackling against the run is a season-long problem a coaching staff can’t fix overnight.
If it’s just rain and Del Rio-Wilson is in the mix, the offense can hang. If the defense keeps getting gashed and the wind shows up, it’s going to be a long day.
Pick: Over 58.5
