Week 9 brings us some late-night action on the island, where the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors welcome in the San Jose State Spartans.

San Jose State enters this game sitting at 3-5 on the season and 2-2 in conference play after winning two straight over the last two weeks against New Mexico and Utah State.

Hawaii enters this one after dropping three straight, putting it at 2-6 overall on the year. The 'Bows needs this win badly, but San Jose State will offer a tough test even with the time change.

Can Hawaii take advantage of a late-night game for the Spartans and win this one at home? Let's dive into the San Jose State vs. Hawaii odds and make a prediction and pick for this college football betting preview on Saturday, Oct. 28.

San Jose State Spartans

Brent Brennan brings his squad into Honolulu to try and steal a road game against Hawaii this week.

San Jose State has gone 3-0 in its last three against the Rainbow Warriors, but it has all been around a 10-point differential, where this line sits.

This squad seems to be a bit better and more competitive than years past after playing some early-season matchups against USC and Oregon State that showed it what it needs to improve upon early.

While Chevan Cordeiro leads this offense that averages nearly 33 points per game, the player who feels most important to the Spartans’ success is running back Kairee Robinson, who's averaging over six yards per carry on the season.

He helps pace this offense that averages 160 yards on the ground per game. This directly translates to the Spartans’ ranking of 28th in Rushing Success Rate and 19th in explosiveness.

As a wide receiver coach for much of his career, head coach Brent Brennan loves to throw the ball. This helps keep teams honest when San Jose State does run the football. The passing attack isn't great at 78th nationally in Success Rate, but it is good enough to prevent the Rainbow Warriors from loading the box each down to try to stop this potent run game.

The San Jose State defense is the weakness of this team. While its offense racks up the points, the defense can't prevent them.

The Spartans allow nearly 31 points per game despite an average starting field position ranking of 42nd in the country. This team seems to be attacked through the air quite often. However, the Spartans have done a decent job of forcing some turnovers with a +7 turnover margin on the season.

The defense will need to show up on the island and get some stops against a struggling Hawaii team.

Hawaii Warriors

Hawaii head coach Timmy Chang is having a rough go at it in his second season in Honolulu. After finishing 3-10 a year ago, the Rainbow Warriors come into this game at 2-6.

He has to get his team going this week at home and try to show at least some improvement year over year if he wants to stay and coach for his alma mater for few more years.

San Jose State is 1-1 in its last two on the island, so Hawaii has an opportunity here for a big upset win.

The Hawaii offense is not nearly as potent as San Jose State’s offense, averaging only 23.5 points per game. This offense almost entirely abandons the run game and airs it out.

Quarterback Brayden Schager has thrown for 2,433 yards on the year with 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. When throwing the ball this much, caution is necessary because the turnovers can really stack up — just as they have for Schager. Because of this, Hawaii has a -13 turnover margin, which will plague any football team.

While the Rainbow Warriors rank 68th in Passing Success Rate, they don't have much of a run game, where they rank 118th in Rushing Success Rate. This offense will need to avoid the interceptions this week to beat a solid SJSU team.

Similar to San Jose State, Hawaii’s defense is even worse than its offense in terms of Success Rate. The 'Bows allows 36 points per game and come in at 116th Success Rate.

The big problem for this defense is what we already discussed: the offense’s turnovers. Hawaii has a horrible average starting field position, coming in dead last nationally in that area. This top unit just can't do much when given no field to work with, and it's shown all season.

San Jose State vs Hawaii

Betting Pick & Prediction

While playing on the island is always a tough task with the time change, I look at this game as a battle of turnovers.

You have one team that takes care of the football and forces turnovers playing a turnover-happy team that doesn't force nearly as many turnovers.

Give me the Spartans of San Jose State to cover the 10.5-point spread on the island this week.
