Washington State vs North Texas Pick, Betting Analysis
I'm going to hold true to what we believe and what we researched all offseason, and that's North Texas' defense is vastly improved.
It may not look accurate based on the final score in Kalamazoo (33-30 win over Western Michigan), but I felt the North Texas defense was put in some really tough spots and Western Michigan really benefited from three short-field touchdowns to inflate its point total.
This is Washington State's first game on the road this season, and it travels east of the Mountain Time Zone.
With defensive coordinator Skyler Cassity, North Texas should stifle the Washington State rushing attack. The Cougars also aren't going to be able to throw the ball effectively.
When you look at Washington State's game against San Diego State, there was a five-minute stretch where it scored 16 points and the game kind of went sideways on San Diego State.
There was also a phantom offsides penalty that negated a blocked punt, which really swung the momentum away from San Diego State, and it just kind of spiraled out of control from there.
Another area of this game that's really important is this is the first opponent this season that will challenge Washington State's secondary. Drew Mestemaker will be ready to go, and this group of receivers is really going to put the stress on Tucker Large and the safety group for Washington State.
I think they get completely shredded in the secondary. Mestemaker is completing 66% of his passes this year with five touchdowns and hasn't thrown an interception.
The threat of a passing attack will prevent Washington State from creeping eight in the box, and it'll really create some holes in the run game.
As far as offensively for Wazoo, there should be absolutely no punch and no explosiveness. North Texas is fifth nationally in pass explosiveness allowed, and Washington State is just 134th in pass explosiveness.
North Texas is 59th nationally in pass down success rate, and Washington State is 134th.
The Mean Green will stifle anything Washington State wants to do offensively, and they'll win this game by a couple of touchdowns.
Pick: North Texas -6
