Bears vs Bengals Preview, Week 9 Prediction
The Bears' four-game winning streak was snapped on Sunday as they fell to the Lamar Jackson-less Ravens. Chicago struggled to get its offense going in that matchup, but we should see that unit take off today.
The Bengals defense ranks last in total EPA and EPA per pass allowed. With starting running back D'Andre Swift out, and rookie Kyle Monangai taking his place, we should see some extra load added to the arm of Caleb Williams.
Williams has had fits of inaccuracy, but he has shown to be explosive to his outside receivers: Rome Odunze and DJ Moore.
With the Bengals generating little pressure, we should see Williams thrive in the pocket against one of the worst secondaries in the league.
On the other side of this matchup, the Bengals have a big question mark looming in the health of quarterback Joe Flacco.
The ageless wonder has sparked the offense as they wait for Joe Burrow to return, but Flacco has been dealing with a shoulder injury and appears to be truly questionable after Sean Clifford was upgraded from the practice squad.
However, whoever is under center — Flacco, Clifford or Jake Browning — will face a Bears defense that has been much better than the stats suggest.
At a glance, the Bears are 30th in yards per rush and yards per pass allowed, as well as 25th in points allowed per game. However, they are 16th in total EPA, 15th in EPA per pass, and 14th in EPA per rush allowed.
Injuries have hampered the secondary, but a closer look shows the Bears are much closer to average compared to how the Bengals have performed.
Bears vs Bengals Prediction, Spread Bet
This is a matchup of teams trending in opposite directions.
The Bears defense is improving and should put together a solid outing regardless of who plays quarterback for the Bengals.
Any stops will amplify the issues for the Bengals defense, as they have not been able to slow down anyone on the ground or through the air.
Back the Bears to cover the spread on the road.
Pick: Bears -2.5 (-115, bet365); bet to -3
