Raiders vs Patriots NFL Week 1 Preview

My favorite total out of all the NFL Week 1 games is RaidersPatriots over 43.5.

I have to lead with the Raiders defense, which our Brandon Anderson ranked as the second-worst in the league entering the 2025 NFL season.

Have you seen the Raiders secondary? It has a legitimate case to be the worst in the league. And to be honest, they have one player on defense — Maxx Crosby — and that's it.

There's only so much defensive coordinator Patrick Graham can do here. They have a rookie corner on the outside in Darien Porter, who just started playing corner one year ago after being a wide receiver. There's Eric Stokes, the Packers castoff, who's terrible. Darnay Holmes, who's terrible in the slot. Isaiah Pola-Mao is one of their safeties — he probably wouldn't start for most teams. Jeremy Chinn isn't great either.

As for the Patriots, their offense should be improved. The offensive line is better, and they have some new skill weapons in rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson and veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to give rising star Drake Maye a better opportunity to succeed.

Maye should be able to cook in this spot. You're going to see new offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels implement a lot of gap-scheme runs, play-action and some boot action. They should have no issues moving the ball.

Raiders vs Patriots Prediction, Betting Analysis

The Patriots have improved on defense, but the Raiders should be able to do their part to push us over.

Las Vegas improved its coaching staff, now headed up by the legendary Pete Carroll, and they brought in a competent quarterback in Geno Smith. They drafted explosive rookie running back Ashton Jeanty, and, of course, Brock Bowers has quickly solidified himself as one of the league's best tight ends.

The Raiders don't have much beyond those three, but it's possible Chip Kelly brings a coaching boost as their new offensive coordinator.

Pick: Over 43.5

Spread

I have no pick for either side of the game spread.

Moneyline

I have no play for either side of the moneyline.

Over/Under

I think both offenses are in a position to move the ball all game. Thus, I think the total is too low and the over is my bet.
