Manchester United closes out its Champions League group-stage campaign by hosting Young Boys on Wednesday at Old Trafford.
In what was one of the most surprising results of the competition, the Swiss club beat the Red Devils in their first match back in September.
Since that defeat, United has gone undefeated with three wins and a draw to claim its place in the knockout stages of the competition. Meanwhile, Young Boys have only secured a draw from their following four UCL fixtures.
It remains to be seen how much the Premier League giants will get up for this match with everything confirmed for the next round, but they will be looking to get revenge from the earlier loss to the visitors.
Rangnick Lands Victory in Man United Debut
New manager Ralf Rangnick secured his first victory at United over the weekend in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
With him just now joining the club, it remains to be seen how much influence he has had on his players in the short span, but his high-pressing style is what the Red Devils have desperately needed.
United has been impressive in the UCL so far, posting a +1 expected-goals difference and 1.48 xG per match, according to fbref.com.
Rangnick hinted in his press conference this week that there will likely be heavy rotation for his team, so it’s unlikely we see star striker Cristiano Ronaldo get a shot at adding to his six UCL goals this campaign.
Young Boys Desperate for Huge Road Victory
While United doesn’t have much to play for in this one, Young Boys do still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Europa League with a win.
The former Swiss champions have been a tale of two teams between their home and away form in the competition.In the two away matches at Atalanta and Villarreal, Young Boys lost the xG battle in both by a combined -2.8 on the stat line and only registered a combined 1.3 xG overall.
Meanwhile at home, the same club owned a +1.6 xG difference on 5.4 xG, finding the back of the net six times.
Americans should see a familiar face leading the line for Young Boys in United States striker Jordan Pefok, who scored the stoppage-time winner when the teams last played.
Betting Analysis & Pick
DraftKings is expecting United to get some revenge in this one, listing the host as a -265 moneyline favorite. However, my attention is on the total and I'm backing under three goals via the alternative line at -105 odds.
I mentioned the issues Young Boys have away from home in the UCL this season. When you add in the fact Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani are both likely out, I think there’s great value on this bet.
It’s easy to forget that Ronaldo not playing means the star who has recorded 12 of United’s 35 goals will be on the bench. You also have to believe Rangnick’s new tactics will continue to improve United on the defensive side, which also lends to this being a low-scoring match.
The heavy squad rotation makes the number too big to back the Red Devils in any sort of fashion. I think the Both Teams to Score — No wager at +110 odds is a decent look as well if you want a different betting option.
I’ll stick to betting the total, as I have it as my best value on the board.
