  • West Bromwich Albion welcomes Southampton to The Hawthorns for Monday's Premier League match.
  • The Baggies are 11 points from safety, meaning a win against the struggling Saints would be huge heading down the stretch.
  • Soccer betting analyst Jeremy Pond explains below why he's backing the host.

It felt completely apropos seeing Sam Allardyce checking his watch in the above photo.  Maybe he was looking to see how many minutes were left in that particular match or perhaps it was something else.

Yet, the irony of it all is the fact time is quickly ticking away on West Bromwich Albion's Premier League future. However, the Baggies get a chance to take a three-point step toward safety Monday when it hosts struggling Southampton at The Hawthorns.

West Brom enters this match 11 points behind 17th-place Newcastle United, which didn't help Allardyce and his squad's chances one bit after pulling off a come-from-behind, 2-1 win over Burnley on Sunday at Turf Moor.

Now, the pressure on the Baggies is even greater with just eight games left on their schedule. A victory against a Southampton side with just four wins in its last 14 matches across all competitions presents a golden opportunity for West Brom to take another step toward safety.

Let's take a look at these sides and see what might be in the cards.

West Brom

If you didn't already know, Allardyce is known for saving clubs headed for relegation and the brutal trip down to the Championship. His track record speaks for itself. Take a look at who “Big Sam” had a big part in saving from relegation during the course of his managerial career:

  • Bolton — 2002-03
  • Blackburn — 2008-09
  • Sunderland — 2015-16
  • Crystal Palace — 2016-07

Now, the task is just the same. Only this time he's doing it with the West Midlands club that's coming off a stunning, 5-2 victory over Chelsea last time out. The Blues jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Baggies in that affair, but a Thiago Silva red card midway through the opening half changed the entire complexion of the game.

West Brom closed that half with two late goals, then tacked three more in the second stanza en route to the blowout with at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea held a 2.4-1.9 edge in expected goals, but it was Allardyce's men who left the pitch with some momentum and three coveted points.

Southampton

Things started off relatively well for the Saints this season, with me actually believing they could potentially finish in the top half of the table. However, that all went south starting with a Jan. 26 loss to Arsenal at St Mary's Stadium.

From that point on, Southampton has gone winless in 10 of its last 12 league fixtures and compiled a horrific 2-9-1 record (W-L-D) in the process. And just like that, the club's chances of finishing inside the top 10 started slipping away.

The lone bright spot for the Saints has been their unexpected run in the FA Cup, having booked a spot in the semifinal round of the competition. Southampton faces Leicester City on April 18 for the right to play for the tournament crown.

Until then, the Saints will try to improve their 14th-place position in the table and build off its 3-2 victory over Burnley in it most recent league game.

Betting Analysis & Pick

Bottom line, it's now or never for the Baggies when it comes to their livelihood in England's top flight. With a relatively unfavorable schedule the rest of the way, this fixture becomes a must-win situation for the desperate outfit.

And when you have a man who basically wrote the script to the "great escape" at the helm in Allardyce, the club and its supporters have to feel like they have a chance to pull off a miracle.

For that reason, I am backing West Brom via a Draw No Bet wager at ripe +150 odds via DraftKings as my top pick. Southampton has been anything but solid as of late, so I expect the Baggies to take full advantage of this moment.

Pick: West Bromwich Albion — Draw No Bet (+150)
