Closing out Sunday’s slate at the World Cup, Spain look to take full control of Group E with a victory over Germany, who would likely be eliminated with a loss.

La Roja had one of the best opening-match performances of the tournament, thumping Coast Rica 7-0 to claim the top spot of the group.

Meanwhile, the Germans fell to a surprising defeat against Japan in a fixture where they were leading at halftime.

With two of Europe’s heavyweights playing each other, this game was circled before the competition began, and we should get an entertaining affair between a pair of teams looking for a result.

Spain Cruising into Fixture

There is really no other way to look at the victory over Costa Rica. It was completely dominated by the Spanish side.

Manager Luis Enrique’s team won just about every statistical category, including the expected goals (xG) battle (3.53-0.00), shots (17-0), big scoring chances (5-0) and completed passes (978-165), according to fotmob.com.

La Roja were also able to get the confidence going for many players, with six different Spaniards finding the back of the net in the triumph.

Some will wonder if this performance was down to a bad Costa Rica side, but it was still the perfect start for Enrique’s squad.

Germany on Opposite End of the Spectrum

On the flip side, there will be a lot of questions that need to be answered by Germany’s manager Hansi Flick after the opening loss to Japan. However, there were some promising signs in defeat.

Die Mannschaft won the xG battle in the match 3.09-1.46, and they created five big scoring chances.

This does point out the big hole that the Germans are missing in that they don’t have an in-form striker to finish off the opportunities.

Chelsea’s Kai Havertz got the start in the opener with the veteran Thomas Müller playing behind him. Werder Bremen striker Niclas Füllkrug replaced Havertz off the bench, but Flick needs to find a goalscorer if Germany plan on making a deep run in this tournament.

Spain vs. Germany Pick

The oddsmakers at bet365 have this listed as a fairly even contest, with Spain coming in as the slight moneyline favorite with +130 odds. The total is set at 2.5 goals, and I am expecting this to be an entertaining match.

With that said, my best bet is a Single Game Parlay, pairing the Yes on Both Teams to Score with the total sailing over two goals at -105.

Starting first with the Germans, Flick’s style that he has implemented is a very offensive game with a high backline, which has led to some high-event matches.

Germany’s six fixtures in the UEFA Nations League this year averaged 3 combined xG per 90 minutes, with both teams finding the back of the net on all but one occasion. This is also the same country that just saw 4.55 combined xG and eight big scoring chances against Japan.

I have a hard time seeing this team hold out a Spain squad that scored in every Nations League match this year, especially when Flick’s side has to keep pushing for a victory.

Both teams will create chances, and I think this could be one of the best games of the tournament when it is all said and done.

The Pick: Single Game Parlay: Both Teams to Score – Yes & Total Over 2 Goals (-105)
