Kenny Ducey's Shelton vs Sonego Preview, Prediction

Ben Shelton Betting Preview

It's been a neat and tidy Wimbledon for Ben Shelton, who's made it through his first three matches without dropping a set. He's been broken just twice all tournament, once in the first round against big-serving lefty Alex Bolt and once in the third round against the pesky Marton Fucsovics.

The powerful Shelton has only faced eight break points in all, something that's definitely encouraging given the American's serve is the hallmark of his game.

His return has been a bit more suspect, and it was only against a weaker server in Rinky Hijikata that he was really able to bring about opportunities on his opponent's serve.

This is a spot, however, where Shelton normally shines. He's looking for the first quarterfinal appearance of his career at Wimbledon, a milestone which was denied by the indomitable Jannik Sinner a year ago. It marked the first time he ever fell in the fourth round of a Grand Slam, until he was ousted by French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz at this stage last month.

Overall, Shelton's made a name for himself in the Grand Slams, and he's now into the second week for the sixth time in 12 tries.

Lorenzo Sonego Betting Preview

Lorenzo Sonego isn't quite the known commodity that Ben Shelton is, but the Italian — much like his opponent — has proven he can turn it on at any time. When he does, he's a very hard man to slow down.

This is the second time that Sonego has found himself in the fourth round of Wimbledon, albeit four years later. He's a solid 21-17 on grass since 2021, and his serve is frequently overlooked — especially against some of the better names on tour.

The Italian went toe-to-toe with Brandon Nakashima — who quietly holds Alexander Zverev-like numbers when it comes to landing his first serve, and Sonego finished the match by landing 76% himself to the American's 73%. It was a magnificent showing, and he managed to bring about 12 break points on return through his five-set thriller.

Sonego established similar credibility at the beginning of the year when he ran through a tough draw to make the quarters of the Australian Open, but he was stopped in his tracks by none other than Shelton in a tight four-set battle.

Shelton vs Sonego Predictions, Betting Analysis

Shelton did manage to solve the problems his hard-hitting opponent was able to present in Australia — a friendly environment for the American, who reached the semis there not too long ago. He only managed to take three more games than his opponent, however, and the match wound up hitting the Over on 41.5 games by a comfortable margin.

Again, at the French Open just last month, Shelton outlasted Sonego 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a dramatic five-set match.

There is very little between these two, yet oddsmakers are bringing the game total down as they doubt Sonego's ability on this surface and slightly overrate Shelton's game up to this point.

I'm simply not buying it; Sonego just made it through two ball bashers, not only matching but exceeding what he's seen on the other side of the net, and he's not only been to two finals on grass but actually claimed a title on the surface back in 2019.

Sonego has every chance to win this match, but the Over would seem to be a no-doubter at this number.

Pick: Over 40.5 (-110 to -125)
