Jay Clarke has been working for a while now to realize his potential at the tour level, so it's almost unbelievable that he's still just 26 years old.
It's just as unbelievable that he's found his way back to Wimbledon for the first time in three years, but given the state of British tennis right now, he was able to secure a wild-card.
At any rate, this isn't a player who's been much of a challenge outside of the ITF level. He's now dropped five straight matches — including two in qualifying for Queen's Club and Eastbourne — and he lacks both the weapons and the consistency to come anywhere close to moving past Dan Evans.
The elder Brit is searching for a bit of magic himself as he nears the end of his career at age 35. With that said, his game has aged well in the past few seasons, given his presence as more of a cerebral player, and now that his body seems to be cooperating with him, the results have been there.
Evans is a prime candidate for grass with prowess on the serve-and-volley and an effective backhand slice that will make his opponent hit a bunch of uncomfortable shots from inside the baseline.
Even if Clarke were feeling comfortable here, he'd still be outclassed, so it's just a bonus that Evans has a distinct edge on this surface against the youngster, who's just 11-35 on grass across all levels.
After taking out the likes of Frances Tiafoe, Miomir Kecmanovic and Tommy Paul in recent weeks, I'm betting on Evans being close to his previous form — which would be good enough to earn him far more respect in the market.
Pick: Evans -6.5 Games (-105 via DraftKings)
Etcheverry vs Pinnington Jones Odds
Etcheverry Odds | -215 |
Pinnington Jones Odds | +160 |
Over/Under | 38.5 (-120o / -115u) |

He's a bit behind schedule, but now that he's graduated from TCU young Jack Pinnington Jones has finally turned pro and has made it into the Wimbledon draw for the first time in his career.
The 22-year-old Brit has a tantalizing set of skills, and his big power has propelled him to plenty of wins in the last two years on faster hardcourts at the lower levels of the game. Grass has been a learning experience — which is the case for any young player given the short grass schedule — but hailing from Great Britain he's had the benefit of tuning up for Wimbledon a bit longer with five wins in nine matches.
At least two of those grass-court losses came against quality opponents, and his last three matches have all come in three sets versus some more experienced talent. Now, he'll have a golden opportunity to showcase his talent against one of the coldest players on tour, Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
Once ticketed for big things on all surfaces, Etcheverry has seemed to lose sight of what he does best. He added a bunch of pop on his serve and a bit on his forehand, but it's caused him to become erratic and as a result, he's labored through this season with a 17-21 record.
The Argentine has lost his last two matches heading into play here — not counting an exhibition he played a few days ago — and it should be said that despite his strong defense, his game is not really a fit on this surface. He's won just five times in 16 grass matches, and even on clay — his favorite surface — he's been awful this year with an 8-11 record.
Etcheverry is down on confidence, he's missing more than ever, and now he's going to compete with a rising talent in front of a hostile crowd. That's a recipe for disaster.
Pick: Pinnington Jones ML (+160 via DraftKings)
