What Actually Goes Wrong
The single most-cited problem in the entire study was a "no ice" request that didn't happen 27.7% of the time
The main entree is comparatively safe. Wrong ingredients in the entree happened just 9% of the time, down sharply from 13.8% the year before. Wrong item entirely, on either the entree or the side, sat around 10%.
The strategic read: your special requests are the highest gamble. If you want to shorten your own odds, order the drink without conditions and pour the ice into the sink yourself.
However, even the worst chain on this board gets your order right 85% of the time, making it a fairly safe bet overall.
However, the spread is real. Seven percent versus 15% is more than double the risk, and you are not making the same bet at every window. If your order involves a special request, and especially if that request involves ice, the chain matters more than you'd think.
Currently, no prediction market is taking action on whether McDonald's remembered to hold the ketchup on your Big Mac, so all you're risking is your lunch break. If your tastes run more to trading markets than to fast food forensics, you can check out this Polymarket promo code.
While your order isn't up for trading, they do offer fun fast food markets, including a current market on whether McDonald's will announce a location in Cuba.
Methodology: How We Cooked Up These Odds
All underlying figures come from Intouch Insight's 24th Annual Drive-Thru Study, which ran 1,651 unannounced mystery-shop visits across 10 quick-service brands in June and July 2024. Visits were geographically distributed and spread across dayparts: 7% at breakfast, 40% at lunch, 12% mid-afternoon, 41% in the evening. Each brand received 165 or 166 visits.
Order accuracy is a single yes/no question put to the shopper: was your drive-thru order filled correctly and completely, including special requests? The error rate is the share answered "no." We converted that implied probability into an American moneyline the same way a sportsbook would price it/
If you want to see how those percentages translate into the plus-money and minus-money figures scattered through this piece, run them through ourbetting odds calculator and watch implied probability turn into a moneyline in real time.
