2026 MLB Home Run Derby Rules

MLB is doing away with the former timer-based Derby model and instead implementing a finite number of swings per round.

In Round 1, hitters will have 20 swings to bash as many baseballs over the fence as possible. In Round 2, that number jumps to 15. The final will also feature 15 swings.

All swings count toward a player’s swing allotment. But if a hitter homers on his final swing of a round, he can continue swinging until he fails to hit one over the fence.

Additionally, there is no longer a “Bonus” round as there was in the past.

Regarding the competition format, there is no bracket for the first round. Instead, the top four home-run hitters from the first round will advance to the second round. If two batters register the same number of home runs, the tiebreaker will be decided by longest home run distance.

The four hitters who advance will then be placed in a two-round, head-to-head, knockout bracket, with the Round 1 winner facing the fourth-place, final-qualified hitter, while the second- and third-place hitters face off.

If the head-to-head hitters in the knockout bracket rounds tie, the tiebreaker will be decided by a three-swing swing-off.
