The New York Yankees host the Athletics on June 27, 2025. First pitch from Yankee Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EDT; the game will be broadcast on YES.

After a tumultuous offseason, the Athletics got off to a strong start and appeared poised to be a competitive team this season. They were 20-16 on May 5 and just one game out of first place in the division. That all quickly changed, as they have gone 13-34 since then and have the second-worst record in the American League.

Now they will head to the Bronx for a three-game series with the Yankees. Despite suffering a recent skid themselves, New York sits atop the AL East and has the best run differential in baseball.

Athletics Betting Preview: Young Bats and a Former Yankee

Former New York Yankees draft pick Mitch Spence will get the ball at Yankee Stadium for the first time in his career.

After five years in that organization and unable to crack the Major League roster, Spence was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Athletics. He made the A’s 2024 Opening Day roster and pitched to a 4.58 ERA across 35 total appearances as a starter and reliever.

Spence was slated to come out of the bullpen this season but was moved to the rotation earlier this month. He has a 3.84 ERA in 26 total appearances this season, and Friday will be his fifth start.

Spence has been effective since moving to the rotation, posting a 2.75 ERA in his four starts, allowing more than one run just once. He is not a big strikeout guy, but has control and uses his cutter to keep the ball on the ground.

Despite the A’s struggles, their offense isn’t horrible. They rank around league average in scoring and are top 10 in home runs and team OPS. Even as their record was heading downhill, the offense was not the cause of their problems.

This is one of the most exciting young cores in baseball. Denzel Clarke, Lawrence Butler, Tyler Soderstrom, Jacob Wilson, Max Muncy, and Nick Kurtz are all 25 years old or younger.

Wilson is one of the most aggressive hitters in the game, and it works for him. He is batting .347 on the season.

Kurtz has already hit 11 home runs in just 42 games since being called up.

New York Yankees Betting Preview: Warren Keeps Improving

Preseason pitching injuries forced the Yankees' hand with their top pitching prospect, Will Warren. He was thrust into the rotation on the Opening Day roster and trusted to continue developing at the big-league level.

After struggling to a 10.32 ERA in five starts at the end of last season, Warren has continued to grow as the season progresses. Still with just 21 career starts under his belt, Warren went from a 5.63 ERA in April to a 4.82 ERA in May to a 3.47 ERA through four starts in June.

The most significant improvements have been lowering his walk rate and his home run rate each month. Warren has great strikeout stuff, thanks in large part to his sweeper — he boasts the most horizontal movement on his sweeper of any pitcher in baseball.

Even with some recent struggles, New York's offense is still as dangerous as any in baseball. The Bronx Bombers rank fourth in runs and have hit the second-most home runs this season. They generate more walks than any team, and getting on base and hitting for power has always been a successful recipe.

Aaron Judge is running away with another AL MVP award thanks to his astonishing 1.180 OPS, although he is getting more help from his supporting cast than in years past.

Ben Rice is having a breakout season in his sophomore campaign, and veteran Trent Grisham has come out of nowhere.

The rest of the lineup has been a little more inconsistent, but each player has gone through stretches of helping to carry this offense alongside Judge.

Athletics vs Yankees Prediction, Betting Analysis

Warren continues to show the electric stuff that made him the Yankees' top pitching prospect.

His sweeper has the most horizontal break of any pitcher in Major League Baseball. His sinker drops four inches more than a league-average sinker. And his fastball has been his best pitch this season, holding opponents to a .182 average against.

The rookie has improved every month and still has plenty of room to grow with a 3.58 xERA more than a full run lower than his current ERA. He pitched into the eighth inning against this A’s team in early May, allowing just one run and striking out seven.

Spence spent five years in the New York minor league system, dreaming of one day pitching at Yankee Stadium. He will finally get that chance with another team and will surely be highly motivated to prove they were wrong.

He has looked solid since being moved into the A’s rotation, allowing one run or fewer in three of his four starts. The Yankees are patient at the plate and look to draw walks or hit one out of the park. Spence has good command, can limit walks, and does a good job at keeping the ball on the ground.

Yankees games have gone under the total in 14 straight games, the longest consecutive under streak for any team since 2018. Let’s hope they can make it 15 in a row on Friday.

Pick: Under 8.5 (-105, FanDuel)

I'm passing on the moneyline.

I'm not interested in the spread for this game.

Over/Under

As mentioned, I recommend betting under 8.5 runs for the total between the A's and Yankees.
