Brewers vs Tigers MLB Betting Preview

Milwaukee Brewers Betting Preview: Annoying at the Plate

Former top prospect Brandon Sproat was the main trade piece Milwaukee received from the Mets in exchange for Freddy Peralta. Many just assumed the Brewers would do what they do and turn him into an ace, but that has not happened yet.

After making his MLB debut at the end of last season, Sproat has four appearances this year and has struggled to a 6.88 ERA. He got shelled in his season debut, allowing seven runs in three innings before being moved to the bullpen for a pair of long relief innings. He returned to the rotation last week and looked strong, allowing just one run while working into the seventh inning. Sproat will look to build on that performance here.

The Brewers continue to have success playing Brewers-style baseball. They score a ton of runs because they walk the second-most in the league and steal more bases than any team. They find a way to get on base, and then they run the bases better than any team.

Christian Yelich landed on the injured list after a hot start, and Jackson Chourio is still out, but the Brewers always find a way for the next man to step up. Brice Turang and William Contreras continue to bang the ball. Turang has a .967 OPS on the year and is one of the most underrated players in the game.

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview: Feels Like Something's Missing

Don’t get it twisted, Tarik Skubal is still the best pitcher in baseball. But, he hasn’t been quite as dominant as last year. His xERA is up to 3.37 from 2.71 last season, and his K/9 rate has dropped from 11.10 to 9.79. He is still elite, but his Baseball Savant page is more in the top 20% of the league than the top 1% of the league.

That being said, he has still only allowed more than one run in one of his five starts. He is still nasty. His changeup is nearly unhittable, and he has allowed just one home run all year. Skubal has completed six innings in all but one outing.

Detroit’s offense has floated around league average to begin the season, ranking mid-pack in most offensive categories like runs, batting average and team OPS. They have lacked depth and power throughout their lineup, and they strike out a ton.

The guys expected to lead this offense — Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Spencer Torkelson — have all gotten off to slow starts. Instead, it has been the young stars Kevin McGonigle and Dillon Dingler breaking out and leading the Tigers at the plate.

Brewers vs Tigers Pick, Betting Analysis

If any team can find a way to steal a couple of runs against Skubal, it’s Milwaukee. Skubal’s strikeout rate has dipped a little bit this year, and the Brewers rarely strike out anyway. They are extremely patient at the plate, are elite at generating walks, and then run the bases better than any team in the league. They lead baseball in stolen bases, and if Skubal gives them any slight opening, they are more effective at turning that into runs than any other team.

Detroit’s offense has been significantly better at home this season, averaging 5.2 runs per game with a .823 team OPS at Comerica Park. Greene has really gotten going at the plate, batting .429 with a 1.175 OPS over the last week, to go along with McGonigle continuing to crush the ball. Carpenter has also clubbed two home runs this week and looks like he has found his power stroke.

I understand Skubal is Skubal, but 6.5 is an extremely low total. For starters, Sproat has only made two starts this season, and he allowed seven runs in one of them. Detroit could hit this total by themselves.

But the Brewers are the best in the league at playing small ball and finding ways to manufacture runs. If they can find a way to squeak out 2-3 runs against Skubal, or do damage against the Tigers' bullpen, this total should go over.

Pick: Over 6.5
