Mariners vs Rangers MLB Betting Preview
As July winds down, six teams in the American League are above .500, and just two are 10 games over .500.
To the surprise of many, the Mariners are not in either category after finishing one game shy of the World Series last season. Many in the industry have been waiting for the Mariners to get hot and run away with the AL West.
Instead, they are 2.5 games back of the final AL Wildcard spot and 1.5 games out of first place in the AL West. Their deficit in the division increased last night as they dropped the series opener 5-4 to the Rangers. They slipped to 20-24 since June 1st and average just 3.7 runs per game in that span.
They did lose Julio Rodriguez to the IL during that stretch, but he has a hit in five of six games since returning to the lineup. Cal Raleigh still has been unable to replicate his near-MVP season, but he did give the T-Mobile Park crowd a jolt with a grand slam in Monday's victory over the Reds.
Meanwhile, Dominic Canzone has cooled off after his hot start and has just three home runs while slashing .209/.293/.373 over the last month.
The Mariners are just 21-31 on the road this season, yet they are still slight favorites. Bryan Woo getting the start tonight may be the reason why. Of the six starters the Mariners have rotated of late, only Luis Castillo has a higher 4.85 than Woo's 4.16 mark for the season. However, Woo may still be their most likely Game 1 starter in a potential wildcard or ALDS series.
He has a 3.45 expected ERA and 3.71 expected FIP. He also ranks in the 90th percentile in chase rate and 95th percentile in walk rate. A lot of the swing and miss he has generated has come against right-handed hitters, who he has limited to a .523 OPS with a 26.2% strikeout rate.
Woo made his MLB debut at Globe Life Field. He has a 3.88 ERA in nine career starts against the Rangers.
Nathan Eovaldi struck out nine in four consecutive starts to head into the All-Star break. However, he had a difficult matchup last time out and had just two while allowing four earned runs in four innings against the Braves. Still, He is tied for 19th in the MLB with 122 strikeouts.
His splitter and curveball have done much of the heavy lifting, generating strikeout and whiff rates over 30% on both pitches. Eovaldi has won four of his six starts, dropping just one decision in that span.
The Rangers have scored at least four runs in each of those outings and are averaging over five runs per game over their last six games overall.
Wyatt Langford has had trouble staying on the field this season, but he has flashed his high-end potential when healthy. Since June 5th, he is slashing .310/.360/.610 with 11 home runs and 24 RBI. He has three home runs in his last five games, hitting his 12th of the season in the first inning last night.
Joc Pederson is second on the team with 17 home runs, with nine coming in the last two months. He did not leave the yard last night but did record his 1,000th hit. He extended his hitting streak to five games in the process as well.

Mariners vs Rangers Pick, Betting Analysis
Bryce Miller had recorded six strikeouts in six of his last seven starts entering last night's game, but he was held without one through five and 1/3 innings.
Despite some hitters in the Rangers lineup that you would expect a few strikeouts from, like Pederson and Jake Burger, they are 20th in strikeouts against right-handed pitchers. With that said, I am still backing Woo tonight.
Woo has recorded six strikeouts in four of his last five starts against the Rangers, and he has a 26% strikeout rate against the current Rangers' lineup. He has also recorded five strikeouts in seven of his last 10 starts.
Action PRO projects him for 5.2 Ks tonight.
On paper, Eovaldi has the better matchup as the Mariners are ninth in strikeout rate against right-handed pitchers. He had seven strikeouts in one of his two starts this season against the Mariners, and he has fanned at least six in eight of his last 10 starts.
Coming off one of his shortest outings of the season, I would expect more length from him, and that will get us to six strikeouts at least.
PRO projects him at exactly six strikeouts.
Combining these two lines gets us to plus odds on BetMGM.
Pick: Nathan Eovaldi 6+ Strikeouts / Bryan Woo 5+ Strikeouts (+110, BetMGM)
