Friday, we take an NRFI between two powerhouse American League teams.

Shane Bieber is 5-0 to the NRFI in 2022. His first-inning split remains perfect. In 16 batters faced, Bieber hasn’t allowed a single hit or walk in the first inning yet. His NRFI splits are just as impressive since 2020 at 30-3 to the NRFI. In this same time span, he is a perfect 12-0 at home.

Bieber is also 3-0 to the NRFI against the Blue Jays dating back to 2018. He holds the upper hand in the batter-pitcher matchups as well:

  • George Springer: 0-for-6
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr: 0-for-2
  • Lourdes Gurriel Jr: 1-for-5

The Blue Jays bats haven’t been performing as of late. They have not achieved a YRFI in their last three games. In the Blue Jays' last 21 days they are hitting just .190 as a team in the first inning, going 4-for-21. Lastly, leadoff hitter Bo Bichette has a wide home/away split. Hitting .275 at home but just .186 on the road to start off 2022.

Like Bieber, Kevin Gausman is also 5-0 to the NRFI in 2022. In 17 first inning batters faced Gausman has only allowed two hits but hasn’t allowed a single walk yet. Since 2020, Gausman is 38-11 to the NRFI. His away split is also respectable at 18-7.

Dating back to 2017, Gausman is 2-0 to the NRFI against the Guardians. The batter-pitcher matchup is also in his favor:

  • Jose Ramirez: 3-for-11
  • Amed Rosario: 1-for-4

In their last 21 days, the Guardians are struggling to the same degree as the Blue Jays but at home in the first inning. Collectively hitting 4-for-21 a .190 batting average. To make matters worse, in their last 10 days they are hitting just .154 in the first inning home or away.

The weather is projecting to be a cold rainy day as well in Cleveland: rainy, 50 degrees with 16-mph winds blowing right to left. These are not ideal hitting conditions.

Look to see both of these 5-0 NRFI pitchers thus far, move to 6-0 with ease.
