Yankees vs Athletics Preview, Prediction
It's safe to say that the Yankees' bats have enjoyed their time at Sutter Health Park as they've scored 17 runs in the first two games of this series. However, this type of output should come as no surprise.
The Bronx Bombers have lived up to their nickname so far this season as they lead the majors in homers. All that power comes from consistently making hard contact, which arguably, there's no team better at.
New York leads the majors in barrel rate and is in the top three in both hard-hit rate and average exit velocity. As for today's matchup, they get to stand in against a familiar face, Luis Severino.
Severino takes the mound this afternoon against his former team with some concerning metrics. The first is his whiff rate, which ranks in the fifth percentile. Sevy is not missing bats at all, and he lacks the groundball rate to make up for that.
As the numbers show, the Yankees are going to put the ball in play with authority, so if strikeouts are out of the equation, New York is primed for another crooked number on the scoreboard.
While the Yankees are certainly the A-side in this matchup when it comes to offensive firepower, the Athletics showed that they cannot be counted out. After mustering just two runs on Friday, they responded by racking up 11 runs, seven of which came against the Yankees' bullpen.
The Athletics have thrived in their temporary home this season, ranking sixth in the majors in team batting average and ninth in average exit velocity. I mentioned that they did the majority of their damage against the Yankees' pen yesterday. Well, they have an opportunity to do even more, as New York has yet to name a starter as of time of writing, which means they are likely opting for a bullpen game.
The only name mentioned by Aaron Boone is Ryan Yarbrough, and his role in this matchup is unknown, but Boone said he'll get work in some capacity. Yarbrough has been excellent at generating soft contact, but his command has been suspect at times, and he lacks the groundball rate to make up for any hard contact made against him.
In this park, the key is to keep the ball on the ground, and neither Yarbrough nor the rest of the Yankees' bullpen has shown they can do that with consistency. Don't count out the Athletics in this one.
Yankees vs Athletics Prediction, Over/Under Pick
The total has closed at 10 and 10.5 in the first two games of the series. Both times the over hit, and of all the games in this series, this matchup presents the best opportunity for the over to come in.
You have two lineups that make loud contact, with the majority of that contact being flyballs. You have two confirmed pitchers who don't generate groundballs.
On top of that, the Yankees' bullpen is forced to find length after four arms were used yesterday to generate six outs. Take the over one last time as these two clubs are likely to make cashing it a hat trick this Mother's Day.
Pick: Over 10
Moneyline
I am avoiding the moneyline.
Run Line (Spread)
I am avoiding the run line.
Over/Under
As mentioned above, I am taking the over.
