Pirates vs Reds Betting Preview
The Pittsburgh Pirates entered the 2026 season with plenty of upside, and they showed it in their opening series against the New York Mets. They challenged one of the best teams in baseball in all three games, and if it wasn't for Oneil Cruz missing two flyballs on Opening Day and bullpen struggles in the following games, they could have easily taken the series.
However, their road trip does not get any easier tonight in Cincinnati as they are set to face another young, elite arm in Chase Burns. I'll dive more into Burns below, but the Pirates aren't primed for much success against him.
While Brandon Lowe provides some pop, this Pirates lineup has a 52.9% groundball rate and just a 1.1% barrel rate through three games. The large majority of their lineup hasn't made much quality contact, and that's not set to improve tonight.
On the mound, Braxton Ashcraft is set to start for the first time this season. For all the hype around Paul Skenes and Bubba Chandler, Ashcraft is a diamond in the rough.
In 2025, he pitched to a 2.71 ERA over 26 games and joined the rotation down the stretch. His success carried over in his eight starts, but he did not provide much length, maxing out at 5 2/3 innings.
Ashcraft should be sharp in this first outing of the season, as he showed no hiccups in Spring Training. According to Handigraphs, he pitched to a 2.03 ERA and posted a 31.9 percent CSW.
However, he averaged just 10 outs per outing across his 13 1/3 innings pitched this spring. So, the length he can give is still a question mark, leaving far too many outs for a Pirates bullpen that has already been overworked.
The Reds benefited from some timely power in their opening series against the Boston Red Sox. Cincinnati took the final two games, each by one run.
However, their lineup holds a ton of very raw talent, and their results at the plate through the first three games show just how wide the range of outcomes is for this team offensively.
At home, especially, there is plenty of power. However, there is a high amount of swing and miss, as they struck out 28.2% of the time this past weekend. It seems as if the Reds are going to be a team that will make it count when they put the ball in play, and they'll have ample opportunities to do so if they can get Ashcraft out of the game early.
If they flounder early, it shouldn't hurt as Chase Burns is primed to deal. Burns is one of the highest-upside pitchers in baseball, and what we saw last season was just a glimpse.
In 44 innings in 2025, Burns pitched to a 2.52 xFIP and held a 34.7% strikeout rate. His stuff is elite and has the potential to be unhittable in the zone, as his 16.4% swinging strike rate displays.
Burns picked up right where he left off this spring and earned a spot in the rotation. However, like Ashcraft, he was not stretched out much in Spring Training, so we likely won't see him work past the fifth inning regardless of the results.
Pirates vs Reds Pick, Betting Analysis
The first five innings of this game are going to be fun to watch as Burns and Ashcraft are two of the best starters on the slate. However, it's after they both depart that this game will be decided.
Pittsburgh's bullpen is in dire straits as they had to eat up eight innings on Opening Day, and they worked extra innings each of the past two days. Meanwhile, the Reds' bullpen looked sharp against a quality Red Sox lineup.
Back Cincinnati to take control of this game in the later innings and notch its third straight victory.
