Pirates vs Giants MLB Betting Preview

Pittsburgh Pirates Betting Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates have not finished above .500 since 2018. Furthermore, they have not made the playoffs since 2015! This franchise is arguably the most downtrodden of the past decade, but they are digging themselves out of baseball hell.

Unfortunately, even with a commendable 21-18 start to the 2026 season, they are still fourth in the NL Central.

The Brewers continue to succeed by winning the margins, while the Cubs have a formidable offense. The Cardinals are also firing on offense, but their rotation is not good enough to sustain their second-place record.

Despite being six games back of first place, this Pirates team could shoot up the standings. They have one of baseball's three best rotations, a remedied closer situation with Gregory Soto's resurgence, and the best prospect in baseball putting things together on offense.

Konnor Griffin's offensive production since April 24 is notable. He is slashing .362/.423/.596 with two HR, six runs, and eight RBI. If he can take that step forward to a good offensive contributor, that is a massive boost to a Pirates lineup helmed by Oneil Cruz, Brandon Lowe, Ryan O'Hearn, and Bryan Reynolds.

The biggest x-factor for the Pirates is 20-year-old SP Seth Hernandez. Hernandez is dominating A-Ball and could shoot up the pipeline if he can mow down hitters at higher levels, too.

The Pirates are unlikely to call Hernandez up if they remain in the middle of the standings this season, but a strong record mixed with Hernandez's dominance could bring him up by September for a playoff push.

The 2026 season is probably not the Pirates' year, but 2027 and beyond are exciting.

San Francisco Giants Betting Preview

Good news: Rafael Devers has hit a home run in back-to-back games and looks like himself with extra-base hits and plate discipline this past week.

Bad News: Almost everything else.

The Giants just won their second game since April 27, and their manager, Tony Vitello, is comparing it to the climax of Shawshank Redemption. Levity be damned, this team is still in the sewers.

There is an active closer battle, Willy Adames is slashing .203/.239/.338, ace Logan Webb looks lost on the mound, and top prospect Bryce Eldridge was called up this week despite the Giants not having a regular roster spot for him.

Eldridge should play every day against right-handed pitchers, but the Giants have multiple infielders they cannot bench for various reasons.

Devers and Adames are getting paid too much, while Casey Schmitt is their best hitter, and Luis Arraez is (somehow) their best fielder. If Arraez were not hitting, he would be the easy choice to bench, yet his bat is performing at a level on par with his past two seasons.

The Eldridge issue is a metaphor for the Giants as a whole. They are dysfunctional, and their kinks are more of a feature than a bug. Despite said kinks, there are several talented players on this roster, but not enough to elevate them beyond mediocrity.

Pirates vs Giants Pick, Betting Analysis

Both starters in today's game have ascended this season. Braxton Ashcraft and Landen Roupp each have an ERA, xFIP, and SIERA below 3.50. They each also have an xERA under 3.00!

Neither pitcher was expected to perform as a front-line starter this season, but both have been significant boosts to their respective rotations.

Ashcraft has the easier matchup today, while Roupp gives us the better opportunity to cash a juicy line. The Giants' homegrown starter has turned a corner this season with his increased strikeout and groundball production.

However, Roupp continues to allow baserunners via walks. His 10.1% BB this season mirrors his career 10.2% rate and will likely bleed into tonight's game against a Pirates offense tied for fifth against right-handed pitchers in walk rate (10.6%).

There is always a needle to thread with overs, given that pitchers need to stay in games to hit a certain mark. The Pirates' offense is a respectable tenth in team wRC+ (106) against RHP.

Nevertheless, Roupp taking this step forward this season grants him more grace than a typical starter who allows a few runs. He has thrown at least six innings in four of seven starts and should go deep against Pittsburgh.

Roupp's only game with more than two walks allowed came against the Dodgers (5), but he has allowed exactly two walks in five starts. Two of those five matchups–the Padres and the Rays–featured opposing offenses ranking in the bottom ten of walk rate against RHP.

Fresh off that start against the Rays, in which Roupp also allowed eight hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 IP, he may eschew the zone early on tonight and bank a walk or two in the first inning alone.

Pick: Landen Roupp Over 2.5 Walks Allowed
