Angels vs Rangers MLB Betting Preview

Los Angeles Angels Betting Preview

As they play out the stretch of what has become yet another highly disappointing season, the Angels enter this series riding a little high after effectively playing spoiler in Houston to start the week.

Los Angeles also took three of four from Texas last week at Angel Stadium and is 8-8 since shipping out several noteworthy pieces at the trade deadline.

Detmers will face the Rangers for the third time since the start of July in this matchup. After allowing five earned runs in Texas on July 9, he bounced back with a dominant performance last week, allowing just one earned run and three hits across six innings.

He has been in strong form recently, posting a 3.53 ERA and 3.23 xFIP across his last 43 1/3 innings (eight starts). Detmers holds a Pitching+ rating of 108 in that span and a strong strikeout-minus-walk rate of 24.8%.

The Angels' new look has been fairly effective throughout a small sample of play since the trade deadline, as Angels relievers have posted an ERA of 3.72 and a league-leading 3.09 xFIP throughout 65 and 1/3 innings.

The Los Angeles offense has really struggled with left-handed pitching this season and will offer a pretty soft matchup for Mackenzie Gore, who was effective when these sides faced off on August 10th. The Angels hold a wRC+ of 84 versus left-handed pitchers since July 1st, and rank last in MLB with a BB/K ratio of 0.21.

Texas Rangers Betting Preview

Gore has struggled recently when it counts, as he's allowed a 5.01 ERA over his last 10 starts.

However, his recent underlying profile suggests he should be due for much better results moving forward, as he holds a 3.41 xERA and 3.46 xFIP over that span. He's struck out 26.1% of batters in that span, and been hard-hit 36.1% of the time.

The Rangers have hit to a wRC+ of 127 versus left-handed pitching since June 1st and rank second in weighted on-base average in that span, though holding the league's highest BABIP does seem to be a large part of the overachievement.

Since Josh Jung's injury on July 21, they have hit to a more modest wRC+ of 105 versus lefties, which is likely in part due to his absence and natural regression from a BABIP heater.

Angels vs Rangers Pick, Betting Analysis

Despite some fairly poor results when it counts, Gore's recent underlying metrics have been quite impressive, and he should continue trending upward.

He fared well in a soft matchup versus the Angels last week, and should be capable of authoring a similar performance Friday in a very pitcher-friendly venue.

The Angels' depleted bullpen following the trade deadline is a little scary, but some young arms have stepped into new roles throughout a small sample of play.

Detmers has quietly been one of the hotter pitchers in the AL for a fairly lengthy sample, and should have a good chance of handling the Rangers effectively once again on Friday.

At -125 or better, I see value in backing this game to feature less than 7.5 runs.

Pick: Under 7.5 Runs (-120, BetMGM | Play to -125)
