Story: Kirby Runs Texas
We are in for a great matchup on Tuesday night at Global Life Field as Mariners’ right-hander George Kirby takes the bump for the second of a three-game set in Arlington.
Rangers’ ace Nathan Eovaldi is set to take the mound after a rough first two starts to his 2026 campaign.
In a matchup featuring two all-star pitchers, runs will likely be at a premium.
Though the Mariners are on the road in this divisional battle, Kirby has looked like the far superior pitcher in this matchup, with Eovaldi posting a dreadful 11.40 ERA and a 2.20 WHIP over his first two outings. The Rangers’ ace has allowed 16 hits and 11 runs in just over eight innings on the mound. While both of Eovaldi’s starts were on the road, I have greater concern than most with the veteran, who is now 36-years of age and showing signs of regression.
Meanwhile, in 10 career starts versus Texas, Kirby is 8-0 with a 1.04 ERA, having allowed just seven runs in those outings. Kirby has annihilated this Rangers lineup, with even Corey Seager recording just one hit in 17 head-to-head plate appearances against Kirby.
The Mariners are far from a strong handicap playing a tough divisional game away from home, but I still feel inclined to back the superior starter.
The Mariners have struggled against Eovaldi in the past. Julio Rodriguez has had the most success, with seven hits across 18 head-to-head plate appearances.
Though I’m willing to look past his poor start, Eovaldi is typically better against power hitters, given his strikeout ability.
But Rodriguez is an elite contact hitter, which typically gives Eovaldi issues — especially early on this season, given his command issues.
I expect Eovaldi to lean on the high-velocity pitches in his arsenal, which may be effective against most of the Mariners' lineup, but Rodriguez thrives against such pitches, especially when they are middle-away.
Picks:
- Mariners ML
- Julio Rodríguez Over 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
