Pinas vs. Pulyaev Pick, Prediction

Damian Pinas is far from the most technical or well-rounded fighter, but he carries one-and-done power that can delete opponents in an instant.

At just 24, Pinas is still extremely green, but he trains at Nova União. This camp is hopefully instilling in him the same anti-grappling mindset as former champion and future Hall-of-Famer Jose Aldo, arguably the best counter-wrestler in the sport's history.

Pinas has shown that he can get outgrappled by opponents (including his last fight against Cesar Almeida) who aren't particularly good at grappling, but I don't think Andrey Pulyaev is a good enough grappler to take advantage of the potential hole in Pinas' skillset; Pulyaev has been clearly outgrappled himself by Liam Anderson, Christian Leroy Duncan, Nick Klein, and Nursulton Ruziboev during his UFC run.

As a result, if Pulyaev can't land takedowns or generate cage control, he will need to survive long enough for Pinas to gas out at elevation eventually; the Suriname-born Arbuan has only gotten past the opening round once in his professional career.

Pinas needs to keep developing as a fighter, or he'll eventually run into a durable opponent at the UFC level who can expose his grappling defense; still, I don't think Pulyaev is the opponent to do so.

If Pulyaev survives for five minutes, I'd consider betting him on the live line, since we don't know much about how Pinas will look in an extended fight; otherwise, this seems like another smash spot for a big favorite.
