Dos Anjos vs. Hernandez Pick, Prediction

Rafael dos Anjos ("RDA") has faced arguably the toughest strength of schedule in promotional history, fighting Donald Cerrone (2x), Khabib Nurmagomedov, Nate Diaz, Anthony Pettis, Eddie Alvarez, Tony Ferguson, Robbie Lawler, Colby Covington, Kamaru Usman, and others – all in or near the prime of their respective careers.

Still, he enters Saturday's bout on a three-fight losing streak after a near two-year layoff, against an explosive opponent seven years his junior.

Hernandez does typically start fast before fading in the back half of his fights – which could pose a serious challenge at elevation in Salt Lake City – and RDA has always shown excellent cardio throughout his career.

RDA needs to make this fight a grind – and force Hernandez to defend takedowns or clinch positions up against the fence – and avoid getting stuck at range against a faster, more powerful opponent.

If Hernandez does not finish, I expect RDA to be competitive on minutes, particularly down the stretch, and I would live bet him after Round 1.

I'd need something closer to +250 to play RDA pre-fight, relative to my projection (+222), or you could take a stab on his inside-the-distance odds (projected +502, listed +700) and hope Hernandez fades.

Still, I think the optimal approach, specifically off the lengthy layoff in his forties, is to wait a round to see how RDA looks before potentially taking a live position; if he's competitive and forcing Hernandez to work, I think the older fighter can rally over the final ten minutes.

Zerillo's Pick:

  • Rafael dos Anjos Live After Round 1
