Rodriguez vs. Coria Pick, Prediction

This is a matchup between two extremely talented flyweight prospects; Rodriguez is the better wrestler, but I view Coria as both the better striker and the more durable athlete, and he's also the bigger man (4" taller, 3" reach advantage) with better power.

I projected a small edge on Coria when his moneyline was closer to +135, but now that it has dropped to +115, I'm in alignment with the market for this fight.

I do still project a pre-fight edge on Coria by KO/TKO (projected +566, listed +800) or inside the distance (projected +398, listed +500), and I'd consider a small play on his finish props; Rodriguez was lucky to survive getting hurt twice by Kevin Borjas, and Coria was similarly unlucky in failing to finish Stewart Nicoll.

Rodriguez might have early wrestling success, but I expect Coria to defend those takedowns more readily as the fight extends, and Rodriguez loses energy.y

Coria trains full time with Joshua Van, and he follows a similar pacing in his fights: concentrating on anti-grappling early before pouring on the pace as he gets a feel for his opponent; that style should lend itself well to fighting at altitude, too.

Take Coria to finish pre-fight, in addition to his point spread (+3.5, -140) and look to bet him live after Round 1.

Zerillo's Picks:

  • Alden Coria +3.5 Points (-130, 0.25u; Caesars)
  • Alden Coria wins Inside the Distance (+500, 0.1u; FanDuel)
  • Alden Coria Live after Round 1
