Midweek, each week (aside from superspeedway races where it's useless), I'll post my FLAGS metric from the past weekend's race.

Action PRO readers who are serious about betting on NASCAR will find it useful to help them handicap future races.

FLAGS (which stands for Field Level Adjusted Green Speed) is my proprietary metric that represents a car and driver's true speed on a lap-by-lap basis. There are two raw FLAGS metrics: the 's' designation means speed-based (or scaled based on the range of the data), while the 'q' designation is the quantile, so based on the ordinal ranking of the drivers.

There is also an adjusted version of each, which accounts for traffic and tire wear, putting everyone on a level playing field to pull out each driver's true race pace.

Let's dive into this past weekend's FLAGS for Circuit of the Americas (COTA), which will be especially useful for future road course races.
