Arkansas vs Virginia College Basketball Preview

Arkansas Basketball

Per usual, it was quite the offseason for Arkansas head coach John Calipari who both secured significant transfer-portal talent, in addition to a few five-star Freshman prospects.

Despite losing a great deal of last year’s offensive production with guards Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas onto the NBA, Calipari landed the second-ranked incoming Freshman in the nation in Guard Jordan Smith Jr., amongst three other recruits ranked inside the top-35.

Coach Cal also acquired SF Jashawn Andrews (14th), 6’6 wing Abdou Toure (16th) and combo guard Davion Thompson (34th) to round out a remarkably talented 2026 Freshman Class.

However, Cal’s second-biggest addition may be 7-footer from Finland, Center Miikka Muurinen, who played very well in the Hogs’ opening blowout victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

In the transfer portal, Arkansas landed former-Georgia wing Jeremiah Wilkinson, in addition to Furman’s 6'11" center Cooper Bowser.

Given the Razorbacks also bring back elite two-way player in SF Billy Richmond, Arkansas is hands down a National Title Contender in 2027.

Virginia Basketball

Virginia entered this season in promising fashion with consecutive 25-point blowout victories over Drexel and Northeastern.

Virginia was fortunately able to retain a large portion of its roster from last year’s 30-win NCAA Tournament team, including Preseason ‘ACC Player of the Year’ in Forward Thijs De Ridder and Center Johann Grunlow amongst a couple of others in its backcourt.

The Hoos have also brought back Guards Sam Lewis and Chance Mallory to bolster their backcourt this season after failing to have signed a single top-100 incoming Freshman from the 2026 Class.

Fortunately for the Cavaliers, roster continuity plays a sizable role early in the season, which could give them a slight edge on Sunday afternoon.

Virginia was also able to acquire Arkansas State’s Christian Harmon in the transfer portal, which provides the Cavaliers with a great mix of familiar faces and a few new additions that should make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor.

Arkansas vs. Virginia Pick, Betting Analysis

We are in for a fantastic top-15 clash on Sunday afternoon featuring two teams with legitimate National Title contender upside.

While I typically favor backing roster continuity early on in the college basketball season largely due to how much turnover has resulted from the transfer-portal era, Calipari's Razorbacks boast remarkable size, athleticism and overall versatility throughout what is surely a deep rotation this season.

Virginia dominated its first two games of the season due to a massive edge in its interior, heavily out-rebounding both opponents with massive statlines from De Ridder and Grunloh.

That said, unlike Drexel and Northeastern, the 12th-ranked Razorbacks are absolutely loaded inside the paint and have the high-end athleticism and physicality to significantly outwork a Hoos team that I expect to succumb to Arkansas' overwhelming interior presence.

In my opinion, at a neutral site, an extremely well-coached Arkansas team loaded with talent has no business being an underdog in this matchup despite the inevitable chemistry that results from Virginia returning most of last year’s primary rotation.

I feel confident backing the Razorbacks to both cover their 2.5-point spread and on the outright +120 moneyline in a top-10 victory that will undoubtedly rank Calipari’s squad as one of the best teams in all of college basketball in the next AP Poll.
