Clemson vs UNC College Basketball Betting Preview

Clemson Basketball

Clemson was 20-4 at one point. It then suffered four straight losses to Virginia Tech, Duke, Wake Forest and Florida State. All were somewhat competitive, but those losses damaged a chance at a particularly high seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Heading into this matchup, Brad Brownell and the Tigers are most likely slotted into an 8-9 game. Down the stretch, it’s vital for them to string together a nice run into the ACC Tournament to hopefully avoid a matchup against a No. 1 seed (if they were to win their first-round matchup).

They also get a fortunate bounce by playing North Carolina without its star freshman, Caleb Wilson. They also come in with some momentum after beating Louisville last time out.

Clemson is well-balanced in terms of scoring, as its highest bucket-getter is RJ Godfrey, who scores just a tick over 11 points per game.

They come in at 18th defensively, as they’ve held 16 opponents to 61 points or fewer.

UNC Basketball

North Carolina has done enough to guarantee a spot in the NCAA Tournament, but its focus now will be to ensure that it has a healthy roster going forward.

This team ranks in the top 40 in offensive and defensive efficiency. They also rank 18th in terms of limiting turnovers.

But Clemson matches up well with North Carolina and can create turnovers. North Carolina ranks 345th in creating turnovers, so I expect Clemson to win the turnover battle.

The Tar Heels have also been a mixed bag over their last six games, since their comeback win against Duke. They've suffered losses to Miami and NC State and have recorded uninspired wins against Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Louisville and Syracuse.

Clemson vs. UNC Betting Analysis

North Carolina is favored by a relatively small spread, when considering the venue and implications of this matchup. But it'll still be without Wilson. While he's out of his cast, he's not cleared for five-on-five action.

This is a good spot to take a flier on the moneyline for the Tigers. This is a lookahead spot for North Carolina, as it has to travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on a Duke team looking for revenge.

I think Clemson, which needs wins to avoid the vaunted 8-9 matchup, will be very motivated in this one.

This spread also indicates that on a neutral floor, without Wilson, Clemson would be favored in a matchup vs. UNC.

I’ll take the team that needs to win more against the team that's a little banged up and looking ahead to this weekend.

Give me the Tigers on the moneyline. If you’d prefer to take points for insurance, be my guest, but I'll play the moneyline for the value.

My Pick: Clemson ML +130
