Lipscomb Basketball
Former Division II standout coach Kevin Carroll has helped Lipscomb maintain a steady level of success in the post-Lennie Acuff era. The Bisons are heading to Cameron Indoor with a 6-4 record and currently rank as the ASUN favorites, per KenPom.
Lipscomb will look to play fast, as it ranks 86th in adjusted tempo. Typically, it wants to pressure after made shots to get the tempo under its terms, and the pressure leads to a 19% defensive turnover rate.
Most of the Bisons' offense comes from downtown, as they shoot 49% of their field goals from deep, connecting at a solid 35% clip. Also, all five starters can drain the 3-ball.
In fact, Lipscomb’s best shooter — Grant Asman — is its tallest player at 6-foot-11. He leads Lipscomb with 13.7 points per game while drilling 41% of his shots from 3.
He and his frontcourt partner — Charlie Williams — are both pick-and-pop weapons with their floor-stretching ability.
On the surface, Lipscomb having a pair of bigs who stand 6-foot-10 and 6-foot-11 is a strength. However, they’re a bit weak, and neither is very physical. The physicality Duke plays with could lead to foul trouble for the two most valuable players on Lipscomb’s roster.
The size disparity could be what leads to the blowout. Lipscomb won’t be able to penetrate and get near the hoop on this Duke defense, which is the strength of point guard Mateo Esmeraldo’s game.
Everything for the Bisons will have to start and end on the perimeter.
Vanderbilt is the only high-major opponent that Lipscomb has faced to date, and the Bisons lost by 41 points.
Duke Basketball
Duke is off to another great start, entering this contest with a 9-0 record with an impressive level of dominance against mid-major teams. The Blue Devils have played five mid-major opponents and won by 31+ points in each one.
The Blue Devils' defense is suffocating, ranking third in KenPom's defensive efficiency. They have terrific positional size, with each rotation player standing 6-foot-5 or taller.
Size is a major reason for Duke's elite field-goal defense numbers. Opponents have the lowest effective field goal percentage (40%) against Duke and the second-lowest 2-point field goal percentage (39.9%).
Cameron Boozer has to be licking his chops for this matchup. He leads the nation in scoring, and the Lipscomb bigs have zero chance of holding Boozer down.
He should force doubles, but the danger in that is Duke can also shoot it well, connecting on 35% of its shots from deep. Boozer is also a very lethal passer out of the post, so Lipscomb really has to decide which option is best.
Duke attempts 3s on 47% of its field goal attempts. However, the most dangerous version of Duke is when it's getting the ball inside and touching the paint (63% on 2-pointers).
Lipscomb vs. Duke Betting Analysis
I have to go with Duke here. It's all systems go on the Blue Devils, even though the spread is rather large compared to KenPom's projected number.
The type of mid-major teams that can keep it fairly close with a team like Duke are slower-paced, defensive-first squads.
Lipscomb wants to play fast, and that'll only lead to a quicker blowout.
My Pick: Duke -33.5
