Memphis Basketball

Very few teams were hit harder by graduation or the transfer portal than the Memphis Tigers.

Of the eight players that played major minutes for a team that won 29 games a year ago, none are currently back on the roster for Penny Hardaway this season.

Now, Memphis did bring in some quality pieces to replace some of those guys, but it's difficult to imagine the Tigers will be anywhere near a five-seed in the NCAA Tournament this season with all of these new faces.

In its home opener, Memphis knocked off San Francisco in a close battle 76-70.

Aaron Bradshaw gives Hardaway a rim protector with a ton of size who should be able to feast on the boards and alter plenty of opposing shots.

Sincere Parker and Dug McDaniel are guards with plenty of experience who have played in big games throughout their careers.

There's a level of playmaking and shot making that is lacking however, and you wonder who will become the Tigers' go-to option late in close games.

Penny played 10 different guys against USF, so there could be a scenario where Memphis has a little bit more depth than it did last season.

But some of that felt like giving various players a chance to perform given there are a lot of question marks in the starting lineup.

To remain competitive against an Ole Miss team that will have revenge on its mind from last season, Bradshaw will need to do a better job of guarding without fouling. The junior big played just eight minutes against the Dons before fouling out on Saturday.

The Tigers will also need to knock down some contested shots from the perimeter against an Ole Miss defense that swarms the lane.

There's no coach in America I trust more to assemble a roster year over year than Chris Beard.

It goes back to his days as a junior college head coach, where he was building teams on the fly and making a name for himself.

It's well documented how he completely changed the culture at Texas Tech; he had Texas in the top 10 before the off-the-court issue in Austin, and now he's already totally shifted the narrative in Oxford in just two years.

That's why I think this year will be no different, and Ole Miss will once again be a single-digit seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Unlike Memphis, there are a couple of familiar faces back from a year ago.

Stud forward Malik Dia returns and should be poised for a monster season as one of the key cogs in this lineup.

Eduardo Klafke is also back and gives the Rebels a capable shooter on the perimeter who can also rebound a bit.

As for the portal additions, there are plenty of them.

A couple that stand out are AJ Storr and Travis Perry, who both already look more comfortable outside of the blue blood locker rooms they came from in Kansas and Kentucky.

Storr was unbelievable as a sophomore at Wisconsin before looking like a shell of himself last year in Lawrence. Beard has always been a confidence builder, and I think you'll see the talented wing have a very solid bounce back year.

Perry saw limited minutes in Lexington, but he should have an opportunity to really flourish in this system.

Lastly there's Frenchmen Ilias Kamardine, who's looked very good through two games, going for 15 and 13 on over 55% shooting and dishing out 11 assists in the process.

If Ole Miss continues to share the ball like it has in the first two games, it should generate tons of open looks both inside and around the arc against Memphis.

Memphis vs. Ole Miss Betting Analysis

I don't think this one will be all that close on Tuesday.

Ole Miss has really impressed me in its first two games, and The Pavilion should have plenty of juice in it for a quality non-conference matchup against a decently big brand name.

The Rebels should have real advantages when they have the ball in the half-court, and I don't think Memphis possesses the shot making to keep pace on the other end.

One of these teams feels like it spent a lot of time together in the offseason, and the other appears to still be working on finding some cohesion.

Give me Ole Miss to win and cover in its own building in what should be an entertaining game.

My Pick: Ole Miss -9
